So as spring is begining to make a appearence I've begun considering this years spring/summer feed (that and I've run out). I am currently feeding a scoop of happy hoof and a sprinkle of pony nuts with garlic, the odd carrot now and again andhalf a bale of hay a evening, to a 15hh 16 years old lami mare (had it twice in the 7 years I've owned her.) She is currently in very light work but hoping to increase this as spring progesses. She does tend to be a good doer but not a hippo :D

I was considering a largely chaff bases diet, speedi beat/fast fibre and happy hoof once again. However I'm not the most knowledgeable feeder so would love so advice.

So the big question is, if I was yours what would you feed me :)

Carrots to all

And just because she is beautiful....

She is beautiful! Very kind eyes.
I would stick to what you are doing. A high fibre/low sugar diet. I love fast fibre (well my horse does!). I would just keep an eye on the situation with grazing more than anything. My friend has a lami and she turns out at night when the sugar content in the grass is lower. Her pony then stays in at night. You could also consider a muzzle if you like her to be turned out 24/7.

Main point to probably consider - is she getting daily required vits and mins from the quantities you are feeding!

If she's a good doer then I wouldn't feed anything apart from maybe a lo-cal balancer and magox as she's has laminitis. I'd also be soaking her hay to remove as much of the sugar as possible and maybe only turning out at night, muzzled. She probably doesn't really need any feed at all TBH.

Look at Dengie's Hi fi Lite Molasses Free. I've just moved my boy on it as it is only 1.5% starch and 2.5% sugar. Mine really loves it and it takes longer to eat than his previous feed. Means he can now have 1/2 scoop twice a day instead of 1/4 scoop of Good Doer.
