I have a 16 yr old gelding, he is currently on a scoop of speedibeet and two scoops on graze on split between two feeds. Added supplements are 20g of aviform suppleaze. He then has 16lb of hay and out on ok grazing for 8-10 hours a day. In light work with an hour schooling three days a week and hacking at w'end.

I would like to put him back on linseed as his coat looked great and he held his weight this winter with added haylage.

I'm wondering if anyone thinks I could have him on anything that would be more beneficial for his age, joints and ESP his feet - over the winter he had sometime off with sore back feet- he's unshod on his back feet and has been for the past few years with no probs but after hooning around the field he went lame and it appeared he had become very sensitive on his soles. He is still showing some of this but didn't have any signs of abscess or lami. He wasn't in anymore work either to effect him. Can only thing it was the frozen ground but appear to be lasting longer.

I don't like molasses, cereal or added rubbish based feed, but anything that could help his feet other than the obvious shoes .....

His diet sounds ok to me, for the feet I would add either Equimms Meta balance ( you have to order it by phone ) or around 40g of Magnesium ( bought off ebay ) a day.

I have a 21 year old who is barefoot and he gets half a scoop of Kwikbeet and a handful of Fibergy with magnesium twice a day, plus a small mug of Linseed; nothing else, no joint supplements or anything he looks the best he ever has and atm has a lot of energy!

I would recommend top spec feed balancer. It is expensive to begin with but you will only need to feed 2 cups a day. It can be feed alone or with your usual feed. I dont feed mine any cereals either and they look great. Check out their website. As they say its peace of mind in a bag, no need for supplements only salt if needed. Very good for hoof growth.
Its such a mine field, with all these feeds out there!! :)

I would put your horse back on the linseed and try fast fibre. It has all the essential vits and mins and is low sugar and no molasses. My girl is on it and she loves it despite being a fussy eater. She's older and a poor doer but the linseed has really helped her keep weight this winter. I would perhaps consider adding a bit of magnesium which you can get from naturalhorsesupplies on line and perhaps some seaweed which is also great for feet.

With the flush if grass we have just had u found my mare footy behind on stoney ground. I moved her to a totally mollasses free diet and 3 weeks later she is back to her rock crunching self!

She can't have alfalfa either so she is on oat straw chaff and Allen and page ride and relax (she will not eat sloppy stuff like calm and condition!).

Before she really was on minimal mollasses, or so I thought, with hifi lite and livery pencils, but changing this really has made a difference.

From what I'm aware of the feed has no Alfa Alfa or molasses in it, just wonderering what I can do other than shoes and work to help his back feet and the fact he has no vits or mins in his diet.
