14hh/14.1hh chunky connemara x, 13 years old. Has a tendancy to put weight on in summer, so he's in work for 6 days a week, consisting of 45mins-1hr of schooling, jumping, hacking, ocasionally free-schooling/lunging.
He was out 24/7 this summer but he started looking a bit round so he's now out during the day and in at night. His field is not huge but not tiny, the grass is short but not bare, and there are a few patches of longer grass. At night he has a small-holed haynet, the haynet is absolutely HUGE so it's about half full, he is getting enough as he always leaves a bit. He is steady when ridden at home but not really lazy. He can be a bit sharp and spooky when hacking. Also when he's out at shows he can be a bit cautious. Bless him

He weighs 473/480 on a weigh tape. He is slightly tubby but he has lost some weight since he's been coming in

Mainly his grass belly deflating I think

Just curious, would you be feeding him anything? What?

feed a balancer as this will give him all the vitamins etc he needs and should keep him in good condition i personally use Top Spec as i find it non heating in factit helps keep my bonkers mare sane she is a connemara x tb
but give a few a ring they are ususally really helpful and often will recommend and other feed you should be feeding.

Daisy is a very good doer and I give her a handful of Dengie Good Doer and a vitamin supplement. Having researched thoroughly, Good Doer is the lowest calorie feed you can get, less than hay or grass so you can make sure he's getting enough roughage without putting on weight. It is molassed though so not suitable if he's laminitic.

just a balancer, maybe with a bit of HiFi lite or similar if you want him to eat it slowly. i really rate Baileys Stud Balancer (stupid name as it is fine for mature comp horses too, it isn't just for studs) and they do a Light version too. i think it's as good as Blue Chip and TopSpec (tried both of them too) but it's much cheaper!

Thanks everyone

Have been considering a vit & min/ balancer, he always used to get a vit & min supplement, to be honest he's absolutely no different without it, he's very shiney, healthy etc. but I think we might get him a balancer to have instead

I was thinking of Baileys No.14 Lo-Cal Balancer?

Sorry I forgot to add that we do soak his hay

I would feed Topspec Lite, it has the far higher spec out of all the balancers! Maybe with Hi-Fi Lite to bulk it out. Soak his hay for a good 12 hours as this removes most of the calorie content but still leaves it palatable. I wish I had a cheap to feed horse!

I ditto the comments about Bailey's Stud Balancer! I use it for all my horses, year round. It's about £18.00 for a 20kg, and 500g/day for your boy would be fine. Fed with something like HiFi Lite, it would be an ideal diet

If he puts weight on eating hay in winter, you could soak his hay ration over night in a bin to reduce the energy levels but still provide him a good source of long fibre.
