If you had a 17hh TB who was in light work (ridden twice a week hacking and a lesson once a week with occassional comp such as dressage/Sj). Is not fizzy but can still be a bit TB every now and again but on whole very sensible, he does not lose weight but looks fit and could maybe have some more. Out all day on grass in at night with as much ad lib hay as he wants.

I am intrigued what you would give him and also if there is maybe something I have not thought about.

Pony nuts or a cool mix
Hi fi or may be alpha a to put a little more weight on with out fizzyness.
Sugar beet for the winter, again for a bit of weight and slow release energy.

Oh and a vit and min supp or a balancer- equi-banlance is the best I've found.

My horse does a little more work than yours and is a little smaller but generally sounds excatly the same.

He has ab lib hay nad haylage mixed at night and is fed Hi-hi and Pasture mix, would normally feed speedibeet around this time of year too-but mine has not dropped any weight yet-so am not feeding it. He has 2 sccops of hi-fi and one of mix split into 2 meals.

Alfa A and speedibeet for fibre, general vit/min, oil if you feel he needs more energy and Topspec flakes for condition.

what kind of oil is good for giving them more energy(a bit of omph if im making sense!!)

Soya oil or a general veg oil, however oil is slow release energy so I don't think you would notice any extra umph! Just enough energy to enable exercise but maintaining weight, stored in muscle for use in endurance type exercise rather than provide the instant sugar rush obtained from eating carbohydrates.

feed what I give mine: Alfa A Oil and High fibre nuts and if you like supplement with general vitamin/ mineral supplement I also feed extra oil but for medical reasons -

At the moment I have got him on Baileys conditioning cubes, Outshine and speedibeet. I also give a nice glug on veg oil and cider vinegar.
In our family we have never fed Alfa as they are out on grass and have so much hay. Does it really make a huge difference?
Also do vit suppliments make that much difference as again I have never fed them? I was thinking maybe a balancer but I want to see results if I am coughing up so much for it.
I have only just got him in this week so will be trying soaked oats once I am in a routine.

I just like to give as much fibre as poss and Alfa is different to grass in its contents of minerals and vitamins ...

regarding supplements, I like to think a broad spec supply during winter when grazing is not so nutritious is useful only if you are not feeding recommended quantity of feed though.

Mine is in similar work load. When I initially dropped off his workload, he got dropped down to Alfa Oil, and Baileys lo cal for the probiotics and vits and mins. He started to loose weight on this, and couldnt mentally handle the increased amount of Alfa Oil required to put weight on! He is now on Ride and relax, Alfa oil, and Baileys lo-cal, and seems to be doing well on this. He is out in the day and on ad-lib hayledge at night.

i would feed something like hifi with soya oil and a balancer like blue chip.
if he lost weight i would add in some sugar beet or baileys calm and condition instead of/in appropriate amounts of low cal to top up if hes not on recomended amounts.

I put my horse on ride and relax last year and he hated it. Even Jimmy a piggy horse was not fond of it. So have stuck to straights since then. AHH the yearly feeding dilemas!
