What would you have done with this cut?

Washed it. Called the vet. I am not any good with injuries but i would say that looks quite deep and in an area that is always moving so probably not very easy to heal!
What did you do?

Washed it and cleaned it up. Usually have anti-B's laying around so would pop them in feed for for a few days.

If started looking nastier rather than better after a couple of days, would get vet.

Looks fairly superficial, so clean, apply a topical wound powder or cream and if it looked nasty at any time, then call the vet out.

We washed it with hibiscrub and brought her in. I want to call vet but not sure what they actually could do? It almost needs gluing together!

Really worried about her, mostly because it's now been 5 hours an it's not scabbing or dryin out at all. But she's not bothered?

Is it superficial looks it? Clean saline solutioons and Betadine spray, keep an eye on horses temp...what did it barb wire????? or stone in field ?? Watch the flies dont nibble, perhaps keep in during day out at night

No idea what she did it on, there is no wire in the field, no obvious stones, nothing I can find. It's SO clean cut it's spooky it's almost like a blade. Damn horses!

Dont wash it too often with hibiscrub otherwise you will wash away any new cells/fibrin mesh formation etc.

A couple of times a day just saline in cooled boiled water and very very gently clean it or even tip it over. Nature will heal this. Just keep an eye on temp and swelling etc. Also sun on the skin as well. If you can keep her in for a couple of days in the daytime and out at night just to keep minimal sun and flies. If you have the vet out no doubt they will give her an antibiotic jab but it looks superficial?

Call the vet by all means if you think it looks deep, but by judging by the photo's I would say you would be chucking good money down the drain!
If that were a cut from a blade it would be far finer.

Hi I had a similar cut to mine a few years back but on stifle. I called vet who said realistically there was nothing they could do (this was 6.30pm) and clean it and use intrasite gel. if still not happy then they would come out.
They came out, gave her anti-Bs and just said keep it clean.
I cleaned it and put intrasite gel on and it healed nicely. - Mine was an inch deep, 2 inches long and because it's in an area always miving, if they stitched it, it would just reopen so it was best to let it heal itself and keep flies out!

It doesn't look especially deep so I would have washed it, made sure all the dirt and gunk was out. A touch of anti septic and left it open to heal.

Clean it by running lots of cold water over it and through it, apply something round it (not directly on it ideally) that will keep the flies off (we use the yellow fly strike cream) and leave her to it for today.

Have a good look and a poke and prod over the next couple of days to make sure it's going the right way, it's not very nice but sometimes you almost need to open and give it a sueeze just to check what's coming out from further isn't nasty. If you're worried that it is get the vet, but otherwise keep applying something to keep the flies away, give it a clean out with cold water when you want, and she'll be reet.

It is the sort of thing that owners will often get vets for, but when you're working on a yard and it's boss's bill you'll be told they don't need one. And they usually don't!

It Is wide but it has a deeper line in the middle. I don't think it needs a vet but I just don't like it :(

Pleased that most of you wouldn't get vet, feel less guilty!

I had one of those the other day. Just a scratch, and only skin deep.

Sluiced with betadine, plastered with cream and observed.

If the horse is UTD with shots and there is no excessive swelling, infection , other cause for concern then that is all I would do. I didn't bother the Vet for this one.

Do you have any trees? My colt did his scratching on a pine tree, silly arse!

Intrasite gel is wonderful stuff by the way, it isn't called that here, but I use it for all things like this.

Washed with hibiscrub and then packed it with sudocreme. It doesn't look like something to be concerned about to me as it doesn't look deep.

i would (and have done when my horse did same thing) wash and then put anti bacterial cream on it, my horse was fine and after a few days there was no sign of any cut!

Ditto not calling out a vet for it; just clean it and keep the flies off it as best you can. I'm sure it'll dry up and heal in no time.

It definitely looks like he's rubbed against something as he's got similar, but less deep, marks just above where the cut is. Wonder what he found to rub up against? If it's hot and the flies are irritating he might be feeling extra itchy ATM. I know mine is.

There's always a chance of something more serious, especially over a joint. For peace of mind I would get the vet, it looks fairly straightforward, but can you be sure there's not a puncture or a piece of bone floating about?

Thanks all - this evening it has healed up much better, is looking a bit drier and generally less horrid. So I have rinsed again with hibiscrub (well, just poured over once), and packed with Protection Plus cream. All vaccinations are fully up to date.

Had a good hunt around the field and cannot see anything she could have done it on. Just don't understand it. Will keep a good eye on it over the next couple of days - will leave it without cream tomorrow eve though so it dries out and scabs.

Damn ponies!

Elderlycoupleindevon - its nowhere near deep enough to have affected any bone - its not even through to muscle, its just the layers of skin. There also isn't any swelling at all, she's let me prod and poke it loads without any flinching, there isn't any heat. It looks to me like she's scratched her arse on something and come away like that!!

Rinsed it out and put green oils on it. It is no more than a skin scratch, and will scab over within a day or two. :)

Ha ha I'm sorry but I looked at the pic and thought " is that it" sorry but I so would not worry. After some off the injuries iv seen something like that is nothing, you really don't need to worry. Make sure tet injection is up to date
