I would suggest that under the recently amended animal welfare legislation that it is the owner of the horse that is legally responsible for the welfare of the horse. This has clearly become an urgent welfare issue due to the deterioration of the horses condition and failure of the owner to get a specialist equine vet in to look at the horse and prescribe medication. I would ask WHW or the BHS to get their welfare officer out again to inspect the horse concerned. I would also provide them with the contact details of the vets that have been involved to date so that they can work together to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

God, how awful Goldenstar. What a stupid person! I'd be livid at them. I'd probably give them a couple of sachets but I would also tell them exactly what I thought of them for putting the pony through what they're putting it through, cand they ought to be ashamed of themselves. It's a shame vets haven't the right to seize and PTS animals that are obviously suffering whose owners won't PTS or treat.

ETA if my husband refused to PTS something that was suffering and threatened to end the marriage if I did that marriage would be done!

I'm with you Honey08. I would probably have been on to the vet as well if I knew who they were and also the local BHS welfare officer. No animal should have to suffer because of an idiot owner, and I'm sorry OP if this person is in any way a friend of yours but if they won't face up to reality then they are an idiot. And as to Mr Anti-euthanasia I'd be giving him an earful as well for the pain and suffering his stance is causing an innocent animal.

I believe it's illegal to buy the danilon from your vet for a horse they have seen as prescribed the drugs for and then pass it on to a friend to give to theirs. Good call from you GS. Hope the pony is ok though.

I would phone WHW and see if one of their field officers could visit them. They are very good and helpful and could help the owner to make the right decision.
