Just doing some research and could do with some ideas from you lovely lot. So what would you like to see offered from a riding school/livery yard?

Obviously value for money is the biggest one but what else?

*block booking rates?
*online arena booking system?
*would a membership fee put you off?
*comps?
*training opportunities?

Any opinions are greatly sought, thanks :)

All year turnout in a herd. Natural shelter.
School with a decent surface.
Good storage
Safe fencing.
Secure yard with owners on site.
Horsewalker.
Well maintained safe stables.
Hay, straw, feed delivered on site.
Good local hacking routes.
Fair booking system for school.

Just an idea, we have a xc course nearby and whereas we're not allowed to jump anything, we can hack around it for free because our yard is so close to it that the YO has asked for written permission to do so, thats really good as the ground there is lovely so we know we're safe to gallop without any hidden rabbit holes. Training opportunities is a good idea! Definitely plenty of nice looking jumps next to the menage, good surface in the menage, if possible lighting. I know one yard where they put up a list every two weeks for people to put their name on it and put if they want either hay or straw or haylage and how much so the yard gets a discount for ordering so much and everyone don't have to bother ordering themselves and picking it up or supervising the delivery. Its not a lot but hope this helps :)

In a riding school, I'd love to have training opportunities (but not during the working week!) and competitions. A good range of horses is important, and a good range of instructors so you can get someone that suits you.

At Livery, I'd be looking for flexibility of services, good hacking, an indoor school and a clear pricing structure and clear procedures!

This^^
Also, knowledgeable staff/grooms. I don't want complete numptys looking after my horse like they have in some yards i've seen.
Indoor and outdoor school
Flexible opening/closing times
If it's also a riding school, i'd like a separate area for livery horses. I don't want members of the public wandering round feeding my horse. Even if there is signs up, there will always be people who ignore them, and i don't want to be responsible if my horse bites some random child.

A limit on the number of liveries! 2 schools (in that case 3 if you're a riding school as well!!!). I have been unable to ride in the past due to large numbers of people in the school. Ideally one for flatwork and one with jumps. Lunge pen. Sensible rules, individual storage areas, decent lighting for the dark nights. Post and rail fencing, xc course, all weather gallops, year round turnout. Sounds lovely...

Depends on how much money you have to spend :)

Im on a budget, my yard has all year turnout, 24hrs through summer. Xc course, jumping paddock and 1 outdoor 1 indoor school. I pay £100 a month for all that :)

If i had more money id be wanting a groom service with experienced horsepeople, large outdoor school with a good service and field shelters would be great.

on the livery front, a yard owner who puts the individual horse and owner's needs as a priority and is willing to discuss on a regular basis the management of both, to relieve owners of so much stress caused by how their animals are being cared for
