I e-mailed about a cob for sale on preloved with no price.

Its a 14.2 16yo trad type, from pictures looks nice but nothing out of the ordinary, good in traffic, suitable for mother daughter share, has had a few foals. They would consider a LWVTB which would be ideal for me but I nearly fell over backwards at what price she was thinking of selling for. What do you think would be a fair price (presuming she is as described) before I e-mail back? I wouldn't even want to view until I had a ball park figure sorted.

Depends... Anywhere between £1.5k and £3k I reckon? If it's been schooled, can trog anyone round a RC event at 70cm and do a sweet test, easily the upper limit.

Hard to say but somewhere between £1200 and £2500 maybe? Depends what she can do and what job you want her for I suppose. x

As far as I know its not jumped or been 'schooled', just hacked and used as a brood mare.

I was thinking around 1 - 1.5K, based on what I have been looking at on Horsemart adtrader etc and Facebook groups. She is asking £3K, perhaps I am out of touch.

I would say anywhere from £2.5k - £3.5k. Age is against her of course but if she is safe and does a bit of everything then worth it.

3k if it is totally bombproof (as much as any horse can be) but for that it would need to go out on own and in company, first or last and pretty much never get hotted up etc and be smartly presented etc.

If it truely has just been hacked out a bit after being a broodmare then 1k is more the ticket I would have thought !

tbh for 3k if it doesnt school, jump etc i would expect it to walk down the motorway without batting an eyelid ! (not literally haha)

£3.5k although could probably get £4k if she finds the right person, it works well in the school, can pop a few fences and is as good as she describes! It's just a case of the horse is worth what you are prepared to pay for it!

Friends of mine just sold a similar mare, but 15.2 & 8yrs old & they got £2500 for her, so less than that i would have thought. Around £1500? Though it really depends on where you are in the country as well, we are in West Wales where things seem to be cheaper anyway.

I wouldn't pay more than £1.5-£2k. If she isn't schooled, just hacked, then she can't be worth more than that, surely?! Getting on a bit, and bred "a few foals". How many is a few? You can't ask £3k for a hacker/broodmare unless her bloodlines are really worth something.

From what she's done by the sounds of things, I wouldn't offer over £2k. I'd be thinking closer to £1.5k, if she's "had a few foals" and has just been hacked about a bit, especially as she's getting on in years. Then again, if all you want her for is hacking and she's a nice hack, then £2k sounds more like it! Its hard to judge it really! :)

I was offered £6k for my then 11 year old traditional cob gelding at a show where he came second in a class of 13. He's 15.1, heavyweight, has been extremely well schooled and is an absolute gentleman to handle and ride. No way on earth I'd part with him ever, but if this mare is as safe and sensible as my boy I wouldn't say £3k was over the top. Maybe take her on trial and once you know what you've got and if she's ever done any schooling you can make an offer from there.

Unfortunately for you safe, sensible cob types are really popular these days so I doubt she'd have a problem selling at the price she's quoted.

Maybe im just out of touch too, but for a 'safe hacking horse' and as that is all he is at the moment- not well schooled or jumps well, and at 16yrs old i wouldnt pay more than £1.5-2k TBH, unless he really is something special!

Well she's 16 so not young by any means which would deter me a little bit, also she's only been hacked and a broodmare so no doubt has no schooling experience whatsoever. Also you say that she is nothing special, I personally wouldn't pay over 1.5k for her, she's getting on a bit and hasn't been schooled which means that if you want to show her then you will have a fair bit of work on your hands first.
Say you bought her now, she'd be 17 (or close!) before you can show/compete/school her well.
So no, there are plenty of nicer horses out there for the same price and the owner is being greedy if you ask me. Even if it was schooled nicely and popping a decent RC course 3k would still be an upper limit due to age alone.

I bought Rufty 2 years ago at the age of 17 for £800. He is 14.3 Arab/Welsh bombproof and forward going.Well schooled and a pleasure to own. He also came with every bit of equipment you could ask for.

Reading some of the previous posts I think that I got a real bargain

Mmmm I have been offered a 15hh 6 year old broodmare that has only been sat on once, they want 1500 for her . I am so not sure what to do, would like to go and have a look but wont waste their time . I think thats a lot of money, dont know what she will make so not sure

I would be honest - tell them what your budget is before you take it any further (ie. I only have £500 but would love to see her) so that you dont fall in love and end up paying over the odds - unless very good breeding I woud have thought £500 is more the ticket for something not sat on more than once

A good , solid, safe cob is worth his weight in gold - I have one and we will never sell him (and yes I did pay more than £3000, but don't regret a penny) If you don't want her there will be many who do. Just look in the wanted ads on Horsequest. The seller will know this, hence the price.

If you're not prepared to pay then walk away. Don't be a time waster to the seller, when she may have other genuine buyers waiting, who are willing to pay.

I paid £2500 for my 16 year old cob mare. She is safe and sound and everything I wanted. Having had a couple of nutters beforehand she was worth every penny.

It depends how much the right horse is worth to you.

Good cobs are worth their weigh in gold as they make horseownership fun and are tough as old boots.
However, not all cobs are equal. This mare is 16 and has been a hack/broodmare. She may be bombproof and an absolute sweetheart who will give you many happy years.
Have a good look at her though, rummage under her feathers for signs of chronic mite infestation to see if she has clean legs and shows no sign of inflamed, thickened folds of skin. If she has been overweight, check for arthritis, laminitis, muscle wastage etc.
I see a lot of cobs that because they're easy keepers are mistakenly thought to be maintenance free.
I think £3K for her is a bit optimistic, however, if she would be perfect for you, healthy and with good conformation, then its worth paying a bit of a premium, but £1500 sounds realistic.

Thanks for responses - Liz66, last thing I would want to do is be a time waster, want to get set in my mind the sort of value before and if I visit. From further delving she has been advertised on a few local sites/groups for a couple of months, so perhaps its not just me who thinks £3k is a bit steep, although I agree that safety is worth a lot.

We paid 3.5K for my daughters super cob a few years ago, 15.1 stunning show cob, bomb proof hacking, could jump 3ft and turn her hoof to everything - including tack. Her ID 3/4 5yo was under 3k.

I paid £2000 for my 11 year old 15.2 cob, he had only hacked and is bombproof and flew through a 5 stage vetting. He came with nearly new tack. So I'd say about £2,000 would be a fair price.

Gosh difficult one this!

I paid £2,500 for my boy when he was 11 years old; he'd come from a trekking centre and whilst I knew I paid through the nose he was a nice sort and I liked him.

He'd had no schooling whatsoever and was hopeless with traffic!! Also had some issues like bronking & wouldn't hack solo.

He's a traddie cob (gelding); and is 16 now. My asking price for him if selling would be say £2000 ish & no less, probably would try for £2,500 - but would expect to have to drop as nothing's selling at the mo; he's schooled nicely now/issues sorted, could do a passable unaffiliated dressage test, brill in traffic, can pop a fence, nice genuine sensible sort but not a slug.

Hope this helps?

Personally, given its age and lack of schooling etc, no more than 1K. If it was for me though, personally I wouldn't offer at all, 16 is beyond my upper age limit for buying by quite a bit.

I bought exactly the same (mare aged 16 family cob 15hh) for £600, however within 2 weeks of owning her I would of happily paid £3000. The fun and safety and confidence she has given me is priceless, and 7 1/2 years on she is still doing the same.

A friend of mine who breeds / deals a few cobs sold a stunning coloured cob mare that had done well in coloured classes as a youngster, had one foal and has only hacked for £1500, she was 5yo. He had a nine year old, slightly finer blue roan which had been used to breed a couple of foals and also hacked, I got asked to take her to x - country schooling day ( very busy! ) where she didn't bat an eyelid at anything. Sold for £800. I would say about £1200 for the horse the OP has asked about though I appreciate horses maybe worth more in different parts of the country.
