What would you pay for a youngster??

Hi everyone, i have lurked around on here reading everyone's post but this is first of my own, just wondering what you would all class as a reasonable price for a quality youngster? have been in the market for 1 for a while and looked at loads, 1 i have fallen in love with, he would be for me to event/showjump and he is well bred, but whilst breeding is there neither dam or sire have any proven track record, well handled but had nothing else , not walked out just left to be a horse. What would you class as a reasonable amount? just looking for general comments to see if i am out of touch?? :)
 
Oh gosh how long is a piece of string. It depends on a lot. How much of a youngster is it? What bloodlines? What registry is it registered with? Quality foals usually sell from 2k upwards. I am in a different country but to give you a rough idea my foals under 12 months old usually sell for between 7.5k to 15k. Yearlings and 2 year olds usually more towards the mid to higher end of that scale. Foals of comparable quality in the UK, with proven dams and sires, I've noticed generally seem to sell for around 3k-6k.
 
Sounds not dissimilar to what I bought - good bloodlines both sides but his sire was young and unproven, dam had done a bit of BSJA and showing but not much at the time (she later jumped to 1.30 level). He hadnt done much, had been well handled in a day to day routine way but nothing in the aim of backing etc. He was rising 3 at the time and just shy of 16hh, and we paid £2700. He's turned out to be bigger than forecast at almost 17hh and probably more 'quality' than the girl that bred him expected, but still think we paid a fair price. He passed a 2 stage at the time with no problems.
 
He has just gone 2 standing just shy of 15h, he is well handled day to day and nice temp dam was graded but unridden sire is still fairly young but quality arab :-)
 
I am also looking for 3/4 year old backed and ready to gt on with, a nice irish type i hope! Proving hard to find a nice irish 3/4 year old around 16.2hh at the moment that isn't advertised from a dealer!
 
As someone else said.. 'how long is a piece of string?!' the question I would ask is 'what is he worth to you?' and do you THINK he will be able to do the job you intend him to do (i.e. does he look to have the ability) and how much (in today's market) would he be worth then.

I paid £3k for a weanling 6 years ago and got in excess of £6k's vet bills in return.... bad luck. As with any horse, you have to be prepared to lose what you invest and wait a while for your potential investment to grow.
 
I paid 2.5k for my beautiful youngster as a yearling, good bloodlines both sides HanoverianXLatvianWB, a quality filly. She wouldve been worth a fair amount more than that now. good youngstock 2/3yr olds tend to be 3-6k as said previously.

Yes indeed, or if you go to the right sales (still smarting at the paltry bids my seriously nice ID youngster got). Producing good, quality young horses takes time and money - but not many people are prepared to pay what they are worth sadly.
 
No multiple account 1 my daughter, who does not agree with my decision, replying to her emails off my phone, unsure how it works but still think I am right :-) but as mum bound to be !!

Save money and time and go direct to source!
 
A lot of depends here, who is the mare graded with? Who is the stallion? What is the youngsters temperament, etc like. Above all how much are they asking for it? If I came across "the one" I would be prepared to pay up to 8k. To breed a quality animal costs a lot of money and to get it to 2yr old even more. I have only bred once and it cost an absolute fortune so now I woud rather see what I am getting than take the risk of breeding.
Don't see anything wrong with them just being left to be horses as long as they are handled. Does he know the basics, lead, groom pick feet up etc?

Depends on the type/breed/size you want and your location. Round here you are looking at a Newfie with fab pedigree for £250 or something that will eventually take you to Burghley for 3/5k. As others have said string/how long :D
 
I've just agreed to pay £5500 fr a 4 year old which has been sat on twice.

Nice breeding, fantastic jump and my GOD it moves!
 
Not sure if I answering for me or mum, dad is h tobago mum is a holme park mare, temp is fantastic and to be fair he is 4 me to enjoy, he is 3.5 not really unreasonable me thinks? X
 
Faracat his sire is h tobago, my mum loves him and the youngster, who is lovely but not as nice as other I seen and 1000 more lot of money
 
That does not make sense clo?, mum is holme park sunbeam, dad is h tobago and echo is stunning, i think so hey ho purse rules kiddo xx will try add pics people sorry x
 
to be fair to my baby i dont know how to add pics or i would, i have 13 year old twins ,who both love to jump, 1 is more confident than the other,i suppose i am out of order as i have chosen the youngster i am happy with? not going to be a walk in the park but he will be mine xx

I have no idea who is the mother and who is the daughter here nor really what you are saying tbh. You two are way too confusing :confused: Anyhow, Hollen Sun'obago isn't 3.5 years old, he's only just turned 2 years old :confused:
