....A 16 hand, 13 year old pink papered Holstiner gelding. Imported from Germany at the begining of the Year where he has show jumped. Well mannered, Hacks alone or in company, schools on the flat and over jumps in a snaffle. Pops 1 m in trot and has jumped bigger but not with me. Non-spooky, bold and honest when jumping, and big expressive paces.

His bloodlines include ATHLET Z, CAPITOL 1, CAPITANO, CORPORAL, LADYKILLER. And many more famous jumping stallions. Schoolmaster when jumping and helps you out when you get the striding wrong and never stops. But can be quirky on the flat, so needs a bit more of an experienced rider, although not nasty or silly.

so how much would you pay for a horse like this?

He was imported to be sold on, and i happened to be at the right place at the right time and brought him. As regards to Jumping i dont know what height he competed at.

I'm afraid I wouldnt put a particularly high price on his head, esp as he's 13, history is a bit hazy and he's not a straightforward ride.

Agree with Boss - I would maybe say £2500 as he has no competition record as such, his age in that he should be a schoolmaster but is not and that he is not a total all-rounder if quirky on the flat.

i would say he is worth more than £2500!

he sounds similar to my mare, same age, similar temperament (esp. in that he can be quirky on the flat!) Ellie has been BSJA, but only to Newcomers level, and we never qualified for anything (my fault, not hers! so she doesnt have an amazing record, other than being Trailblazers reserve champ. as i say, they sound quite similar! and a year ago, we had someone willing to pay £9000 for her

(someone offered us £12000 at a show when she was 7). i wouldnt have said that the fact he isnt a pure schoolmaster should matter much; he'd still have plenty to give someone, as 13 isnt old!!!

Thank you for your opinions, but when i say quirky on the flat i mean he will try and take the micky if he thinks he can get away with it ( like any other horse ) but when told to do as hes told he gets on with it and is a push button ride. Maybe quirky wasnt the right word to use as he is not dangerous just can be a little lazy.

I was thinking about 2.5k too

I have heard of some stupid prices being banded around for horses and all for something not very special. I could go to the continent and get exactly that but with more of a record for £5k. In fact I am trying one out tonight as a potential eventer amazing breeding, green 6yo and they paid meat money for him.

agree with majority of above about relatively lower prices. You have to consider if you can't prove competition record he will get made an automatic grade A by the BSJA due to the age at which he was imported. You would have to contact the German national federation to prove what level of winnings he had and you could still find him stuck with a large amount.

£4000.

I brought a mare similar subject to vetting that was £2.5k however she didn't pass vetting suspected broken down. Wouldn't touch something similar to her again because I wonder why these horses are imported and sold so cheap. No such thing as a free lunch!

At 13 years old he was very likely bought in Germany for a few hundred pounds. I would expect the dealer to inflate his price somewhat to probably around £2,500 - £3,000. Nice little profit.

If he is still alive at this age then the information you were given about him showjumping in Germany is very likely true otherwise he would have been canned a few years ago.

Best of luck - enjoy him.

i'm really not understanding this: why, at 13, is he lucky to still be alive? or, for that matter, only worth a few hundred? from the OP's description, i wouldnt have said he was a likely candidate for the 'can', even if he hadnt showjumped in germany. i dont understand the implication that any horse without a major competitive record is useless!

Well, I must be barking mad, from the replies above, but I would say he is worth at least £4k. It's all very well saying £2500 is all he's worth, but you go and buy a horse like that for that money! You don't get much at all for that value, IMO. If he was my horse, I'd contact the BSJA and get the email address's you need for contacting the foreign competition bodies. If you email them they will get back to you with his competition history (I've just done it myself and got replies the next day).

well said! my thoughts entirely

The problem is, people are saying what they think this horse is realisticly worth, but you have to take into consideration the current prices for horses- yes,s they are rediculously high at the moment, but I think you should price your horse at these prices- simply because if you advertise your horse for what it realistically is worth, people will think the price is too low so there must be something wrong with it, and therefore bypass the ad.

Hi Tricksy
Yes i mannaged to persuade the parents that it would be worth keeping him until the nights started getting dark early, just so i could carry on having as much fun on him as i have had during the summer.

He is such a fun horse, i just hope whoever gets him will enjoy him as much as i have. It will be sad to see him go

Then you have quite obviously never bought WBs direct from Germany and you quite obviously did not read my post clearly

.

Thea asked what we would pay for this horse based on the information she gave - my figure given is based on this information and my experience of buying and importing German WBs.

I initially thought 2 - 3k. Sorry if you were expecting people to say more.

Fact is, he is 13 and most horses can get over 1m from a trot, so not much special from that aspect. If he is a really nice horse then it's quite possible that you will get more than this, but nothing you said in the original post made me think there was anything special about him..?
