My OH has been out changing the tractor oil and he had a bit of a mishap and covered himself and the dog in dirty oil

. Then he leaves the dog in the house and it sits on the sofa (ok it is old) but you can imagine! Then to top it off he decides to wash his overall in my washing machine

. Fortunately the washing machine decided to break and the door wouldn't open - so overalls still in a bucket of water!

OH can't understand why I would be mad...the overalls cost him nearly £20?! ....uhm...£20 or £300 washing machine?

No I certainly wouldn't put anything with oil on it in my washing machine. I wouldn't put any horse or dog things in my washing machine either.....

Hi Wolfie, You are in grave danger of becoming bitter and twisted over the unfortunate incident but I'm sure it will all come out in the wash..I am glad you were able to get it off your chest. My other half has on occasions be heard to moan also. Whats wrong with using the old wash board.

OMG!!
You are going to hate me Tia!!

EVERYTHING goes in my washer, dog towels, horse towels sweat rugs...
AND i put my brushes in the dishwasher!!!

Yep!!
gets rid of all the grease, but put them in bristles up otherwise you get the wire tray marks on you brushes due to the heat!!
I don't use any detergent though, incase it causes a reaction on the horses skin.

Oh Yuck ...

That has brought a whole new level of fear.... I never thought about the dishwasher being abused before! Your not giving my OH tips on how to use household machinery are you?

Next time get him to spray WD40 on the oil it just vanishes, then pop them into you new washing machine!! That's if he has survived this episode!!

Absolutely! AND the cat litter trays!

Possibly the weirdest thing that I've had in my dishwasher was a horse's leg that was being prepared as an anatomical specimen. I'd boiled all the flesh off it but wanted it just that bit cleaner and drier - into the dishwasher with it!

Horse brushes go in our washing machine....inside an old pillow case or similar.....NEVER in the dishwasher though....YUCK ! Bits on the other hand...........

Actually, pretty much anything goes in our washing machine.....rugs, numnahs, tendon boots, travel boots....

We do have a Miele though....industrial strength

Cat litter trays that is horrible, I can't even think about the leg. The idea of washing horse brushes has never even occourred to me. Probably because the only thing olympic likes being brushed with is a plastic curry comb as hard as possible, he also likes being scratched with rocks

Interesting

Yes, I probably would put the overalls in the washer unless they were excessively covered in oil - detergent is supposed to break down oil. Maybe I'd regret it though - not sure

I also wash saddle cloths, dog blankets, fury cat bed in there (used to wash horse rugs, but they wrecked my previous machine and OH was not a happy bunny!).

I wash bits, stirrup irons, spurs and spur straps in my dishwasher. Hadn't thought of doing my grooming kit in there - excellent idea, thanks for the tip

Thankfully I have my own washing machine for all horse/dog things. Dad used to go mental if i mentioned puting a numnah in the washing machine - so he got me a cheapo one from a job he was doing (basically it was being thrown out) so i have that plus an old tumble dryer for my kit!
Mind you, i go mental when mum puts the dog beds in there cos they are all hairy and it sticks to the velcro on teh horses boots lol

If I wash something not nice. After washing it i put the washing machine on another hot wash cycle with only the washing powder in it and give the washing maching a wash!!!. And dont forget to clean the filters before this and after this.....

Oh no, not the cat litter tray.. I don't mind horse rugs, numnahs, filthy muck boots but somehow cat litter makes me cringe..
We add stirrup irons and bits to our dishwasher, the temperature used is hot enough to destroy most bugs, but they do go on a long and intensive wash!

Re Washing; How about a power washer. Great for cleaning all sorts of things not only the car and lorries. I've cleaned stable mats and rugs. We even power washed a stallion who loved it. The dog goes mad trying to bite the jet but is not to keen on actually being washed. Once I've got it out everyone gets a share. Its just so much fun.

I am renovating an old cottage and insisting on two washing machines in the new utility room so that I can wash cat/dog/horse stuff separate. I have to say that the cat litter tray and horse's leg posts made me feel a bit ill!

I do clean the dishwasher out after "non-human" use on an ultra-hot wash. Also if you have a look at what's in the average dishwasher tablet not a lot is going to get past that.

Question for those who were horrified at the the thought of the cat litter tray: Do you have dogs and if so do you let them wash any part of you? If so you are at a greater risk of catching any of their bugs than you would be if you put a fresh dog poo in the dishwasher with your breakfast plates and put them on a hot wash with a tablet!

I would put oily things in, but I would pre-wash them in the sink first to get the worst off. Yesterday I washed some brushing boots, a girth, a lead rope and some travel boots in the washing machine, followed by a dog bed, then washed the washing machine afterwards. All horse washing gets soaked in the sink first to get the mud off, and I have one of those huge stone sinks which holds loads! If anyone let an oily dog onto my sofa I would be very cross indeed...
