Had the physio to my 5yr old today & to cut long story short she has said he is very sore on his back end & may possibly have sacroiliac & is also sore in the poll area. She saw me ride him & said that his back end wasn't working with his front & was weak. So she is coming back out in 2wks, but in the mean time has left me with exercises to do & has also told me she wants him lunged at least twice a week hard if I can do more then brilliant & said ride him once just doing some pole work or a short hack. She suggested getitng a equiami as she said she uses them & finds them alot better & easier. I mentioned to her about a pessoa as I can borrow one & she said to use either one, but what are your thoughts on the 2?

I have been looking online at the 2 & prices. Looks like he will be gettign his xmas pressie early :p

They're pretty much both the same, both encourage the horse to work from behind.
If you can borrow a Pessoa then borrow that. There's plenty of online tutorials to show how to set it up if you're unsure.
Good luck!

Just to add, there's so many cheap Training Systems exactly like the Pessoa on eBay for around £30. I have one and its lasted me 3 years and still going strong.

I have a pessoa but stopped using it after some said it can catch them in the mouth with every hind leg movement. That said my horses did go really well in it.

Then I borrowed an Equiami literally just on Tuesday. Mare went VERY nicely in it. Will use it again next week and if she goes just as well then I think I will get the Equiami although I may use the pessoa once more to compare.

Ha sorry about that as I don't think I have helped at all!!!

Good luck tho' and I hope your horse comes good for you.

I am not familiar with the Pessoa but the Equiami is great because it doesn't catch them in the mouth. That said 2 weeks is a tiny amount of time and I would not expect to see any change from any kind of work regime in that amount of time. I would also be a bit weary of working a horse hard on the lunge as it does put a lot of strain on them and you may cause other injuries. I would do 20 minutes absolute tops and part of that should be warm up working more long and low.

Thankyou for the reply's. The physio recommended I use an Equiami, but no one I know has one so a lady on the yard is lending me her pessoa so see how we go & going to get one of the girls to show me how to fit them. Sorry BooBoos I should of been more clear I asked the physio how long lunging session & she did say 20 mins top, but lots of walking & trotting. I have used this physio before & all the girls on yard use her so thankfully know she is very good & works along side our vet. Fingers crossed I am heading in the right direction now :)

I haven't seen equiami in real life but I have seen Pessoa. Going on that I would buy equiami. I need to use 2 lines tho as my horse doesn't lunge otherwise. Is this possible?

My girl is recovering from sacroiliac and I use a pessoa on her twice a week, I would borrow your friends and see how you go, use it on the long and low setting you want to be seeing him really stretch down to work and strengthen his back muscles (I do some carrot stretches before lunging to supple the muscles). I can't comment on the equiami as I haven't used one, in fact my physio only mentioned the pessoa, but it seems to be working for me.

Just to mention raised trotting pole are great and walking up hills if up have them, walk with a purpose don't let him dawdle and he engage his hindquarters. :)

equiami :D
My physio was amazed at the difference in my horse and not been using all that long. My 14.3 goes so very well in it, my 13.3 really argued to start with and then gave in all in one session so am hoping with continued to use she'll continue to improve :) But 13.3 is very tense in jaw and likes to hollow (not in any pain, checked out properly regularly) and the aid started to change that toward the end of the session.

Chose it over the Pessoa as Pessoa jabs them in the mouth constantly, whereas when they work properly in the EquiAmi there is no pressure on them whatsoever.

At the moment he is worked about 3 times a week so the physio said she would rather him lunged at the moment so she has told me to lunge him twice a week & ride the other time, but if I can do more days then that would be better. She said when I ride him to try & do some pole work.

Thankyou everyone for your help & suggestions. I am going to borrow the pessoa & see how he goes as don't want to go out & buy one without trying. Maybe I could Santer Claws for the Equiami :p
