Really impossible question to answer, one I hate - how to get accross the fact that you can actually ride without massively overstating things and setting yourself up for a fall????

I normally go with something like "I've been riding since I was a child and am competant to walk trot and canter in open spaces" assuming I'm answering this question because I'm riding at an unfamiliar place like a trekking centre or something.

Hubby always goes with "novice" or "competent but nervous" on the basis that he will never be over horsed.

I wouldn't know what to say - I have been riding about 8 years and consider that a fair amount of time but I don't count myself as an 'experienced' rider. I have ridden plently of naughty horses and ponies that have tried to throw me off - used to think it was fun

but you wont find me doing that anymore. So maybe I'm an OK rider - just average - well I don't fall off easy anyway

ETA - I have also owned horses for the 8 years I've ridden - family rides aswell.

Im going to start horse hunting soon and im dreading the whole trying to explain what type of rider i am.

I wouldnt class myself as an experienced rider even though ive ben riding 20 plus years and had my own for 12. I think its because ive had my own that makes me feel like im not an experienced rider, i rode lots of other horses at the time but always had the safety of getting back on my own.
I think im going to go with the i can walk, trot, canter, have jumped low level aff, am ok in open spaces but still have lots ot learn.
An experienced novice perhaps?

Difficult one....I have ridden since a child but not competed....so I have 'stickability' and can manage to control my horses out hacking in groups and alone, and can school ok....most likely not a good 'technical' rider and my jumping is a bit parp but generally I stay on, stay in control and thats good enough for me......

Some lessons probably wouldn't go amiss

I recognise your horse I think, if it begins with a B??! I think you are better than an experienced novice, and would be fine on something a bit sharper!!!

I say, and mean it, that I CAN ride but I am not A rider.

I am the ultimate happy hacker, I can stay on board, but my style would have instructors rushing to put me on the lungeline and take away my stirrups. I couldn't ride one side of a 'proper' horse and don't have any aspirations to do so either.

i'd just say im a competent rider neither novice or experianced i've always owned my own horse or pony but have had my mum and instructors to back me up apart from when hacking alone and feel that i could possibly handle a variety of horses in different situations

Its always a tough question to answer. When we go riding overseas I normally just say that I can ride pretty much anything but always come back with Ill just take whatever is left. Im more interested in making sure my party is well matched than what I end up with.
