this isn't for me!!

An adult friend of mine is seriously looking into getting a horse, she has an idea of what she wants....but imo it's not what she should get and she would probably be out horsing herself

She's not novice, has been riding for 5yrs, but she isn't the most confident person. She is having lessons every weekend at the moment, be isn't learning anything. She's riding a french trotter who has been there done that got the tee-shirt and she has said that it's a bit boring. So when the weather's better and the ground isn't so wet she will be coming to ours to ride either Motty or Hemir, (with some help from an instructor we know) and learning all about stable management...etc..etc!! If she was to get a horse now it would be kept at ours, and then moved closer to her house, or if she waits and gets one later then it will be kept near her house!

She's looking at a big heavy horse atm, but has said that the ones she has ridden in the past are too much for her and she doesn't enjoy it

Now her reason for getting a heavy horse is so that another freind of ours, who is quite big, can ride it, and so that she can also drive it.

But imo she would be better off thinking about what she wants and not being 'kind' for other peoples sakes

she seems to want to please everyone else

She has also said she would like to compete it in low level sj/dressage

so can't decide what she wants!!

So my thought was, what about her getting a big pony - haflinger or fjord?? then she could drive it, and still compete in local sj/dressage. Or even just thinking about what she REALLY wants to get and get herself a nice sensible riding horse!!

She doesn't look silly on ponies like the haflinger even though she is 5ft7 ish!!

something like this : don't worry about writing, it's jsut type that i'm looking at

do you think this sounds sensible, or would you tell me to butt out, and let her chose

or something completly different??

thanks

She should be buying what she wants and whats suits her personality and ability. Only if the other girl will be donating towards keep etc should she be looking for something that will also suit her.

Probably best letting her make her own mistakes. I've bought horses that have been wrong for me, but if I hadn't learnt the hard way, I still may be looking for that ex-racer thoroughbred. I learnt the hard way and now have a lovely little cob.

She wants to get something for herself. Other people may have a good plan, and then they go off and do something different.
Your ideas sound very good.

She should also see if she can do the BHS Horse Owner's Certificate, see if your County Committee are running any courses.
They go from Level 1 which is quite basic and very good for a novice, right up to Level 4 which is almost degree level.

Firstly she should get what she feels happy with, not her friend, unless they are sharing properly. Having a heavy horse or pony makes no diffence with respect how hard they will be, its temperament that counts., She could find a heavy horse that is an absolute gem, whereas some ponies can be pure evil in a small package.

With a big heavy horse there is more to groom, pick out, rug up I suppose!

thanks everyone!

Tiffany - no the other girl wont be contributing!!

Liri_Lou - I understand, but she would be buying a big heavy horse for th wrong reasons, not that it wouldn't be suitable!

orangehorse - We're in France so the BHS exams aren't possible!! there are tests over here, but they don't let you have the real experience you need to be able to look after your own horse.

lastchancer - thats exactly what i don't want her doing!!

magicmillbrook - no they wouldn't be sharing properly, I know there isn't a difference in care, but she has said that a heavy horse is too much for her to ride on her own. I just want her to get hte right horse/pony for her and not a freind!!
