What would you want for around £3500-£4000?

An older 'been there, done it' all rounder, that maybe has a talent for one discipline that it is regularily placed in at local level...

Or a bomproof hack horse with a temperament suitable for any member of the family...

Or a seasoned and safe hunter.......

Or a well established PC pony......

A good budget as long as you are not looking for a 'world beater' x

Here in Ireland right now, that money would get you quite a lot of horse - people just cannot shift them at the minute.

OK you wouldnt get Valegro, but you would end up with something with plenty of scope.

That said, in other parts of the UK your mileage will vary.

OMG

I'm am so glad I came on here today. I lost my horse of a lifetime on Friday in the storm and decided to buy a horse unseen to ease the pain. Don't really see the point of try outs as I am self aware enough to realise that nothing will be good enough.

They were asking £6K (funnily enough my limit) for something which was nothing like as good as you guys are saying. I have no idea of cost of horses, I'd rescued my one as a foal.

Classic example in the other post of why this forum works re advise.

Guess they were trying to profiteer from grief then... urrrgh.

I agree with this and as a happy hacker(first one on the list) unable to find that one I would have upped my budget for the ugliest, two headed etc but as long as it was safe as houses, traffic etc brakes, farrier I would have paid this. But too many ruined horses I gave up! Too many ruined. I paid £1400 for this type about 12 years ago and hit jackpot and was very lucky to find him. Worth his weight in gold he was.

List what you want, then it really is worth spending time on sites like the H&H classifieds, Horsequest, horsedeals etc to get an idea of what a horse is worth. Pay for want the horse has done. I never pay attention to " could do xxx" unless its a professionial with a reputation to match, as you just don't know till you have tried.

Very very sorry you have lost your horse of a lifetime. ..take your time ..

- A very good quality (but not exceptional) unbroken 2/3 yo
- A reasonably nice, safe & sound 4/5yo for RC/lower affiliated
- A nice, well mannered easy pleasure horse for hacking/sponsored rides/prelim dressage/small jumping in the 6-10 yo bracket
- A teenage schoolmaster, generally sound and easy but dropping back to RC/lower affiliated
- A quality competition horse that comes with issues that need to be managed

All my horses cost me less than £2k but if I were to spend that much I would be looking for a semi well bred warmblood/ Spanish horse with decent paces, excellent conformation and very good temperament.

For a older horse, that amount would buy you a decent Rc horse but with not a huge amount of experience or talent to get to a very high level in any sphere. But maybe a good hacker and can turn its hoof to anything.
