While still on his back, picked up a jump pole?

I had tried to higher the jump while on his back but silly me dropped it, so I grabbed the other one and held it, then asked him to walk on. He looked at the pole, turned his head right around, saw I had hold of it and said 'ok mom' off he walked Got to the edge of the arena and I threw the pole over the top of the fence :biggrin:

A couple of the students had stood watching us and were :jawdropblue: They asked me how come you can do that with him, lead him under an umberella, yet he has silly huge spooks at nothing?? The answer I said is simple, mom controls the brollie and the jump pole, and mom would NEVER hurt him, BUT he doesn't know who is controlling the 'nothing' !!!

So you see he is not as mad as you think :rofl:

Not a lot I wouldn't think, they both drive or used to drive so they are used to poles being near them and dragging things etc.

Haha! I used to do that when i was still riding my 13.2s. They didn't give a damn. I would carry poles and jump wings while on their backs, used to be quite fun actually, lol.

None of mine would do anything. They are used to having things like this done on them and by them from day-dot. It's the way all horses should be in my opinion.

snap! Funny you should say that... there is a fox that wanders round the perimeter of our outdoor and the week before I broke my leg I caught it out of the corner of my eye whilst putting a jump up on Sam. I calmly swapped to the other side of the jump so he could see it coming lol!

My problem isnt being able to pick up poles on horseback.... my boy enjoys nothing more than either chewing or flicking off poles during lessons..... which usually scares the pants off the other horses. Woops...

Yep same logic or not? Can be applied to Sov, who today spent most of our hack jumping and spooking at nothing (and invisible nothing at that) but in other things is so sensible.

. There must be something going on in that tiny little head!

Painted Pony wouldn't do a thing, she might flick an ear back but if I asked her to do something she wouldn't dream of not trying her best to do it. I don't know how she was trained but she's completely unflappable, so much so, that fond of her as I am, I do wonder if she's a few cards short of a deck, I have never, ever encountered such a quiet horse. Sometimes I wish that she'd show a little bit of spark I find her very boring to ride.

I just take it for granted that horses should put up with us doing stuff.

This morning when I brought my boys in there was an electrician drilling up on ladders right outside my new boys stable, I didnt bat an eyelid and neither did he, cant be doing with horses being silly over little things.

i think half the time horses that spook at 'nothing' do it just to liven up the ride LOL

I agree. One of our horses broke a couple of rails on the post and rail fencing a couple of weeks ago; so we went and bought some more 6X2 to replace the broken rails. Hubby took truck into field with the stallion and 2 mares; the horses on the other side of the fence are 9 big geldings. We were there measuring the lengths, hubby was cutting the boards with his chainsaw, I was screwing them on with the drill (new wood squeaking like heck) and all of the horses were over seeing what was going on. Even when hubby started up the chainsaw, none of them moved back or became worried.

I could choose a hundred incidents like this and I guarantee none of them would flinch.

I couldn't bear having a spooky horse - it would completely ruin my nice predictable rides.

This is a good thing

Mine doesn't bother. Often have to raise the jump (no helper) and cant be bothered to get off first.

funnily enough I did that yesterday, hanging off the side of him to raise a jump. He's only 4 bless him, didn't bat an eyelid! I'm yet to find anything that that horse is bothered by actually, if something looks 'scary' he goes over to investigate an sticks his nose in it
