What would your horse do if your hacking companion bolted!?

Mine would probally both try to go with them. Luca used to be the one who did the bolting off, fortunately my friend I hacked out withs horse was never fast enough to catch up with him! Though one day Luca spooked at something whilst hacking, causing my friends horse to spook very over-exaggeratedly, dump my friend, spin round and race off across a wheat field, with Luca doing his best to pelt after him. Fortunately I managed to haul Luca round before the end of the field, my friends horse kept going, onto a main road! Having now regained control (in a sense) I quickly cantered back to my friend to check she was conscious/ok etc as couldn't see her buried in the wheat, she was alright so I set off after her horse who thankfully hadn't been hit by a car (he easily could have been as it was a busy 60mph A road.) He'd crossed it at full gallop into some fields on the other side and was charging around in one of these. Thankfully we managed to catch him in the end and everyone was ok but it was very scary. Friend never wanted to hack out with me again after that, quite upsetting really as it wasn't realy my fault

I would too without a doubt. I broke my leg falling off during a mass bolting when I was 14 (am 33 now) and I am frightened of it happening again.

I feel a bit guilty really as K never goes for a blast with me, I ask my friend to take him instead as I am just too scared.

This happened to me a few times but once I was out with another lady and my (at the time) 9yr old sister and we were cantering and the 1st horse took off and my sisters pony followed and I pulled mine up and he was very well behaved had to walk and trot to find the other horses and was extremly worried as I was responsible for my sister but didnt want 3 bolting horses. As I always got out with my sister I feel I need to be in control of my horse.

The first time I went on a hack with the woman I now work for, I was on another person's (crazy) horse while she rode one of her own.
Mine bolted, spooked by nothing, and I had to bail. Her horse is normally too spooky to hack alone but he didn't go after the other horse and stayed pretty calm. I think he was going "WTF is going on here then??!"

Well ridden you too though!

I have done it (aaages ago) to quite a few hacking partners, and the incredible number of horses that don't come with you is reassuring.

Think it's like someone said - the other horse just sort of goes "what is with you?" and stays with their owner. Also takes adrenaline to make them go like that, as it's a lot of effort!

Been in this situation a few times, twice on the road and twice off it. I'm ashamed to say my mare will be off like a rocket after the other horse. One time I managed to stop her from taking off completely but we bucked, reared and squealed until we caught up with the other horse instead.

My old horse: without a doubt would bolt, most likely over take, and most likely keep going even once the other horse had stopped.
Current loan horse: reary/stampy/snorty/twirly stuff, but probably not actually following- I can generally hold him

Great replies everyone! It was actually the first time it has happened to me. We did have a situation once when we were overtaken during a quiet canter across the stubble but never a full blown bolt before.
It was very reassuring that I could hold my horse - a 17.1hh in a snaffle - and that my friend (who is 65)could sit a bolt like that!
Hope it doesn't happen again although you couldn't blame any horse for taking fright at the steam train!
