Thank you very much in advance for any advice, feeling very at sea :o

He has been back in work now around a week and has been ridden on the roads 3 x, pics were taken after 20 min ride today.
Shoes have been off 7 weeks in total following surgery.
He has been off box rest 3 weeks, he is turned out for around 7 hrs now on poor grazing.

Feed wise, late cut haylege on a night, moderate amount but not ad lib as on a diet and poor grazing during day.

2 x feeds of;
1/4 stubbs scoop high fibre mix (baileys)
handful of hi fi
slop of soaked speedi beet
and just started
pro hoof supplement

He is really striding out on the tarmac road, footy on stony drive

Anyway pics...

He has not been trimmed for around 4 weeks when farrier just tidied round.

Any opinions, wisdom of anything!!!!!

Shepard's pie, raspberry cake and rose wine up for grabs :D

Thank you!!!!! :):)

Id say there is a bit of flare around the quarters, and frogs look a bit ragged and thrushy.
Try cutting out the mix, and minerals should help improve the flare too.
I'd treat for thrush.

The walls do look a little longer than I'd like if the horse were mine, but as he's gone from box rest to roadwork 3x week I'm sure that will sort itself out and growth = wear.

Hoof wise there is a lot to be happy with for just starting out.

The flaring and scratty frogs will sort themselves out with work and time.

You will find the more muscular and strong the frog becomes, the more comfortable he will become.

If you still find yourself struggling as the grass comes in, you could maybe just feed the beet and pro-hoof for the season and see if that helps.

If he is at grass and otherwise a decent weight, you may be able to hold off linseed until the winter time.

I'd swap the mix and hifi for fast fibre.
Add linseed meal.
And do as much roadwork as comfy :)

Thank you, have avoided linseed thus far as he doesn't need anymore condition! lol.

Yes going to avoid linseed for now, he does need to loose weight.

Would you be worried about him wearing down his toes oberon? Thanks for reply :)

Thank u :). Will start treating for thrush, have some Milton.

A horse newly out of shoes will wear the toes until the back part of the hoof (frog and heels) are strong enough to play their part.

To explain in human terms - if you had a blister on your heel - you would put more weight on your toes. When the blister healed, you would distribute your weight more evenly again.

At this time I don't see any excessive wear anyway and certainly nothing damaging structurally. From a BF perspective, his hooves are long. So he has plenty of hoof to sacrifice for now ;).

Eeee long?

I like that analogy, puts it into perspective more thank you :)

I just want them to be ok, really worried about him being footy or in pain

Thinking of boots but sounds like he has more wear yet which is good x thank you Oberon.
