Hopefully, at some point within the next 12 months (planning now, but obviously depends when people can take on new pupils) for -at least- 12 months. Talked it over with Dad & contacted a few places now. I'm thinking this is a reasonable excuse to buy some things I've needed for a while, like new breeches that will actually last & fit well (as much as I love cheap breeches from decathlon...), better winter wear etc...


So, what wouldn't you be without? Summer/winter clothing especially! Preferably that isn't going to cost me an arm AND a leg ;)
Will be doing riding/ground work hopefully as well as yard work. Will also be taking Dante.

Decent boots- Buying cheap is a false economy when you literally LIVE in them. Also a really good waterproof coat or two. Its miserable when you get a real soaking first thing and spend the rest of the day cold and soggy!
Musto jackets are very good- but the thin light weight ones are not very waterproof (I spent last Thursday very cold and soggy!)

Agreed - definitely want a decent pair of waterproof yard boots, my Brogini's are just about giving up (after 2yrs including a winter & a half of being used for EVERYTHING :o I pity them!) and considering some boots & chaps for day-to-day riding.... oh dear.
Musto jackets! They did a lovely long riding coat a few years ago that did NOT resemble a tent... I wonder if they still make them...

Ariat Grasmeres for winter.
Ariat paddock boots for summer (lace-up ones, can't remember which model) and 1/2 chaps.
full seat breeches - either Pikeur, Cavallo, or Kerrits for me.
really nice long socks.
berghaus body warmer.
truly WATERPROOF thin shell jacket.
Buff neckwarmers for spring/autumn, TurtleFur (or similar for skiing!) neckwarmers for winter.
really comfy ski hat, just the right size, not so tight as to be annoying, but won't be blown off my head!
good gloves. Mark Todd for summer, Sealskinz for winter.
ShockAbsorber sports bras, no more bra straps sliding off my shoulders driving me nuts when schooling!
 
Waterproof over trousers
Warm gloves, as well as a riding pair
A good lightweight breathable riding hat, you may on some yards find that you have to lead, turnout etc in them so make sure it fits and doesn't give headaches or bad hat hair!
I found that those hand warmer things you reset in kettle are great on cold mornings.

An evening pampering kit!!! A must, body lotion, nail kit etc.
DVDs and a iPod
A back up of mates phones numbers etc, in fact a back up phone is fab. The amount of times mine have been broke on yards.

This sounds like a good list! Have heard many good things about Ariat boots recently - wondering whether it is worth replacing my Brogini's with a pair of the Ariat Bromonts, although they seem quite soft and I'm not sure this would suit my silly bendy legs... :o They are very comfortable though!

I was just going to say get a pair of Ariat Bromonts - 2 years in and mine are still going strong ! I slept in mine in my car last night waiting for a mare to foal after sludging round for hours at a show all day in the driving rain wearing them and my feet were the warmest part of my body ! !

Loads of good fleece gloves so you can just stick them in the washer when they get sopping

PS she foaled at 4am got to bed at 6.20 back at desk job by 9 - oh the joys but still on a high now!!
 
As others have mentioned: good boots, lightweight waterproofs, good gloves and warm waterproof clothes for winter - I use ski jackets/trousers and they are a godsend! The other thing I used a LOT in yards, especially winter was a thermos mug full of coffee for the morning muck out! :D

ETA: instead of waterproof gloves in winter I use fleece gloves with a pair of marigolds over the top ;)

I like these ones :D iPod & laptop are never far away :rolleyes: But a spare phone isn't a bad idea! I thought I lost mine in the muckheap the other month... after 20mins of frantic digging, I decided to check around the whole yard (including the stallions beds... also lovely), and finally recheck my coat pockets. Well, you can guess.... :o I wont be leaving my pockets unzipped again though!! My phone does like to throw itself around, completely unaided I swear ;)

A few huge bags of sweets and chocolate stuffed in your grooming box. You won't have time to stop for a morning snack,

I was named the sweet lady at my last yard :D
 
A laptop! I went abroad and it was invaluable not only for researching things to do in the local area on my day off but also for keeping in contact with friends and family back home! :)
 
ornella prosperis, expensive but WELL worth it, last for years so work out cheaper in the end. JUST DONT WASH THEM!!!!
a good pasta sauce recipe book - you wont have time or energy to make anything else
Millions of pairs of socks, i always wear 2 pairs of socks every day to stop blisters, sore feet etc. Nothig better than coming in after a full day and putting clean dry warm socks on. Instant comfort!
Heat holder socks for the winter
A flapjack recipe. Invaluable for grab and go moments of serious hunger!
Dublin waterproof fleece gloves. Thin enough to still do buckles up etc, looong cuffs so no draughts up your sleeves, fleecy for warmth and cheap enough to chuck em and buy more when you get a hole in them.
Dont buy too expensive things, they will all get trashed ppretty quickly! :D
 
Can I just put in another vote for Ariats?! I would love to have a pair for every occasion! They were the only things that saved my poor feet from the trauma of being stood on for 12 hours a day, solid!
 
Fooood, must not forget that! Will be doing all my own shopping though (tbh I more or less do this anyway... and all my own cooking...) so will be a good excuse to constantly be cooking all sorts of goodies... I have an odd habit of making cakes at ridiculous times at night :o
Ariats are definitely sounding good, will have to try some again. Insulated or non-insulated!?

Regarding food - find out if you will have a freezer, it's a massive help if you do.

Look at cooking things like pasta bake, lasagne, BIG stir frys etc etc. Makes it cheap and you can make big batches and just heat a bit in a microwave and add some salad or similar each day. Even better if you have a freezer cos you can do big cooks and freeze portions of various things. You will get fed up of each thing by day 5 but it's so quick and easy. (I lived on pasta bake for HOYS week last year. I don't think I've eaten it since!!)

A cheese grater and pizza slicer!!

Blankets! Accomodation isn't always centrally heated!!
