Whatever happened to ....?

I think Robinsons still sell the Newmarket style stuff

Can still buy Newmarket rugs and I think Robinsons do jute ones - suppose they just lost out to newer fabrics that dry easier and aren't so heavy

Well Ihave a newmarket excersise rug , also knew them as whitney blankets.

NZ's I still call "turn out rugs" NZ's.

Now canvas NZ are pretty much long gone but you can get them if you want, not really sure why you would want one though.

i tried to find a new zealand rug last year but ended up getting a robinsons canvas rug which was the closest thing i could find!

Is that the canvas style ones? I got a few on robinsons but think they are starting to fade those out!!! They are brilliant rugs, wish they would bring them back in again

No, no, not looking to buy any of these things - just reminiscing.

For instance, we now have 'rutn-out rugs' not New Zealands.

We have quilted stable rugs of various thicknesses instead of Jute rugs.

various straps instead of surcingles etc, etc.

Just wondered what else we don't have/use anymore

well if any ones looking for a newmarket exercise sheet i got one to get rid off. never use it although it came with the horse.

non stainless steel stirrup irons and bits you used to have to clean with Duraglit

travel bandages - everyone seems to use travel boots now - less support though - plus individual travel knee and hock boots

sheepskin numnahs that were real fleece

'orange' rubber covered reins - really wide and thick - suitable only for those with large hands

felt brushing boots and boots with leather straps and buckles in general

Oh yes, I remember that, the colour choices when I was a kid were black, red, blue, yellow or green.

Now you can have more or less whatever you want - why have I still got black then?

LOL... If I competed anymore I would still use travel bandages, knee and hock boots!

LOVED those flappy cross country boots, when i had my 13.2hh, and thought they were really cool as they were NAVY and not black!!

I think it can go to far tho, (sorry if this causes offence) a woman at the yard i go to has decked her horse out in leopard print..... poor pony!

I still set fair and quarter my horse! Its the only thing I manage to do when I get to the yard after work as its late....I strap in the summer too but cant manage to make a wisp out of hay.
What about candy striped puffas? !

I also only last winter finally consigned my black Spillers Puffa jacket to the bonfire, think it must have been nearly 20 years old and the dogs are sleeping on an old Spillers Horseware rug too!

What about those white browbands we had to put on polished leather and brass headcollars for Sundays in case the owners walked down the yard and all the horses would have smart woollen day rugs which were changed at evening stables? Does anyone do that any more?

Hobbles over to keyboard, muttering "I remember, I remember"

My witney day blanket and newmarket (the real wool one, not some tacky copy) quarter sheet were the only rugs that survived my move, I couldn't bear to throw them away. I did chuck away one ancient jute rug that must have been about 30 years old, hubby refused point blank to let me bring it!

Does anyone still use those old big holed anti sweat sheets? Or layer with blankets the old fashioned way?

When I did my AI we had blankets and jute rugs (OMG! 25 years ago now) and every morning the blankets were stripped off, the horses quartered, the jutes were reversed and the fronts folded back for the day.

NOOOOOOO!!! Really sorry, this is not a personal get at you I promise cos loads of people do it - but it is WITNEY blanket as in the place, not WHITNEY as in the 1980's singer lady! Its just a personal bugbear because I used to live near there - sorry - will get off my soapbox now

Do you remember johds with huge thighs. And only came in light colours. Hated black johds when they first came in. Now I wear all sorts of colours and only beige for competition.
