What's a half-spoon snaffle and how does it work?

I mean... I know what it looks like

but can't figure out what the bar thingies are for.. does it work like a full-cheek snaffle or does it have some other mysterious purpose?

Is it maybe upside down and it does in fact work like a full cheek snaffle? Or maybe, it's way past my bedtime?!?!?

I think it's like a full cheek snaffle.

Googled it and apparently it is to stop the bit being pulled through the horses mouth when its ridden and it is in fact the correct way up. Usually used on driving horses but can be used ridden and works similarly to a full cheek snaffle ... oh, you do learn a new thing every day!
