Following on from earlier post about your best ever horsey purchase - what's been your biggest waste of money? (and you definitely can't say your horse - that would not be nice!)

My most recent stupid purchase is a thing from Robinsons catalogue you put in your stirrup to help you mount from the ground. I thought it might be useful for when i have to get off out hacking. Luckily i tried it out in the yard first. Put the thing into my stirrup - fine. Got my foot into it - easy! Went to swing my leg over the saddle - no way. It was far too long. Another addition to the box of useless purchases in my tack room.

I bought some boot holder-uppy thingies... you know that stop your boot flopping over.
They broke before they even went into the boot, so THAT was a waste of money! I now use plastic bottles, which are much better (and not broken!

Fal slver interactive fly rug. Very expensive but bought because i love the fal range and I spoil my horse. Horse caught it on gate and ripped it to bits in 24hours

Just unfortunate really but never the less I was p....d off!!! And it is proving impossible to mend! But it damn well will be mended, and put on one of the others so that presshus can have a new nice tidy one!!!

Rugs of ebay that were older than described or didnt fit. But resold them.

Mark Todd travel boots, 2 sets bought in burgundy, pony size, but I only have the one pony!!! But hey they were a bargain and will go onto ebay at some point.

I will try to think of some more!!

I seem to be a head collar and numnah addict?!?!? Don't know why but could have a numnah for every day of the week (oh ok month! eeek) and head collars must have about 15-ish and only have two horseys!

My wasted money is on bl**dy shoes, can't keep them on for longer than two weeks! Oh I need a farrier hubby!!

i think my biggest waste is supplements - They promise wonderfull things and i fall for it every time (doh!!) So my new rule is NO MORE SUPLLEMENTS! Except cider vinegar and brewers yeast both of which are CHEAP!!!!!!

Also I bought two beatifull and scarily expensive Mattes Lambswool saddle cloths for the gorgeous one, only to discover that their thickness makes her saddle slip and I can't use them

I can't bring myself to sell them either because I'd lose so much money and anyway one day ........

I used to loooove my stirrup get on from the ground thing - maybe mine was a different make?

Big waste of money was a hayball which was quite expensive & just fell apart.

Also, our previous lorry. Very very stupidly viewed it in the dark & imagined it would be okay cos it was being sold via the guy who serviced our (then) current lorry. When we saw it in the light, it turned out to be a big pile of poo, v scruffy & we could never trust it to start.

A HORSE
grin.gif

Paid a £1,000 for a pony a few years ago, did not bother getting it vetted as it was a £1,000.
I got it from a dealer, in which they told me it was 13
smile.gif
Got it back to the yard a week later get the vet to come out to do her injections said could you just run a few checks over with her to see she is not in foal or anything like that LOL!
Turns out she would be 20+ and starting to go blind in one eye
shocked.gif
!!!!!!!!!! Rang the dealer and to be fair they gave me my money back and took the horse!!
I was going to do a one day event with it the following week, It would of dropped down dead I think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets see i've only had George 3 weeks and already:
pair of stirrup leathers which after using I realised were too long (ok they could be spares)
horrible effol hoof stuff - now on kevin bacons
a fly hood - George had 50 fits and now has a fringe instead
giant tub of cod liver oil - horses are vegetarian what was I thinking, now using soya

Blimey if this carries on I really will be skint!!

Im a robinsons bargain section addict. I have things that i know i will never use. Ive got so many rugs, numnahs, girths.

However the biggest waste of money was at a recent show, got a pair of magnetic boots for one of my lot, they are crap lol. Also got myself a magnetic bracelet that was suppose to help my bad back. All it did was make me sick.

Id say a Rhinegold turnout rug. Was meant to be waterproof for the summer. But it leaked straight away! Even a shower would have it soaked through, totally useless. Never bought anything from them again, well actually I bought their full neck stable rug at the same time as the turnout and its brilliant.....! Ok, so I wouldnt buy a turnout from them again!

no - think its just that I've got veeerry short legs!

Mine was also a lorry. It was supposed to be a 3.5 tonner, I didnt get it weighed as I trusted the seller, as he was a police man with a solicitor for a wife. I paid 13000 for it and had to sell it for half that 6 months later when I realised it was useless!

I bought some manual handheld clippers once as my horse was scared of clipping, they snapped in half the first time I tried to use them! Complete naffness! And they were meant to be metal, looked more like silver painted ceramics!

Rhinegold lightweight turnout rug - it wouldn't do up over her chest even though it was a size bigger than she usually takes, leaked like hell even in a bit of drizzle and ripped within a month (she's never ripped any other rug). Never buying Rhinegold again, sticking with Masta for cob-suitable rugs!

I'm sure there has been many things over the last few years, struggling to think of them off the top of my head now.
Most recently a premier equine lightweight turnout which leaks better than a sieve!

Biggest waste of money... horse that was a rig. So I sold it.

Other than that, lots of rubbishy rugs that didnt fit/got shredded within a day. But I have sold them all on ebay now. Wasted money on head collars and saddle cloths I didnt need. Ebay is a wonderful thing.

Mine was a rolled snaffle bridle on Ebay. It looked like it was a nice bridle from the picture, but it was very badly designed and didn't fit at all. Made the horse look very strange. It wasn't cheap either.

A synthetic endurance bridle, plaited browband & noseband, looked nice from the photo. I ordered the cob size, put it on my 14.1hh Welsh D, the throatlash and noseband just about squeezed round, but the bit hung below his mouth!! Took it home, cut it up(

) and sewed it back together so that the cheekpieces were under half the length they were originally. Put it on and the bit was resting against his teeth, still FAR too low. He wore it for maybe 5mins tops and because they put a plasticy type material on the back of the browband and noseband, he was soaked with sweat under it. WORST £20 I have EVER spent!

Otherwise I have more numnahs, rugs and girths than I know what to do with - I'm an addict!!

I suppose it would be the horse that got kicked in the stifle, rehabilitated at a cost of £10,000 including vets fees (half of which were claimed under insurance) and then we gave away to someone who could finish the job
frown.gif

But as that was a horse, and we don't count the cost when it relates to our equine friends, it wasn't a waste of money.

The most useless piece of equipment I have bought was a Rhino Runna. You are supposed to be able to put a bucket of water in it to wheel to your box. However, the first one I bought had a crack in the metal and split handles. So Robinsons exchanged it. I then found out the first obvious design flaw. You can put the empty bucket in the contraption and fill it up, but you can't get it out single handed! The second design flaw, as soon as you start wheeling it the momentum makes water slop everywhere.

When the farmer dropped a bale of hay on it and flattened it within a week, I didn't shed too many tears.

Putting Amy in to foal. Cost an arm and a leg - and ended up with no foal and no horse

It was exciting trying though.
