Hi all, well ive just been having a think about vets bills and was wondering what amounts some people might of had to of paid in the past. My one and only thankfully was a £1,OOO for choke.

£1400 dog GDV. Emergency middle of the night 3 hour long surgery involving two vets, and no insurance!

Biggest bill was £2265 for a double stifle arthroscopy. But both my horses maxed out £5000 claims each. Thank god for insurance - there is no way I could have forked out £10000 in 2 years.

I am hoping for slightly smaller bills from now on... had my run of bad luck and don't want anymore!!

Curly Wurly

Could you give me more info on the horse you mention with choke?
What happened and what was the treatment?

Thanks
PS My biggest bill was 1200 for ligament treatment!

Lucys final bill. :( It cost over £2000 to diagnose her then another £2000 for treatment :( She was not insured and I don't have that kind of money lieing around. Luckly my amazing vets let me pay abit at a time. It was all worth it for the extra 8 months and I would do it again if it ment I could have her back. :( I lost her in July and I still have 6 months of payments left till the bill is cleared :( But like I said it was all so worth it.

£10k in 8 months. March Navicular and loss of use payout on one. Nov same year new horse 2 weeks in vets, surgery on hock. I love NFU, paid up without a single question.

$1400 dystocia, lost twin colts, saved the mare.

No insurance, policies generally are mortality only, not worth it for horses less than $10,000 on the whole. You pay up or put down.

About £3k for colic surgery iirc.
Umm, how the hell did you get a bill for £1k for choke? I've had to have the vet 3 times for 1 of mine with it, all emergency after-hours call outs, and the bill was never more than about £200 ish...

*Touches wood* My largest vet bill to date is just under £670 for my cat after she had a mysterious accident a few weeks ago. That was out of hours emergency, exploratory surgery as her muscle etc was hanging out, over 2 hours surgery trying to unroll her skin back over her leg to stitch, three overnight stays, five lots of antibiotics, two courses of steroids, another operation as it wasn't healing properly and developed a fluid pocket that was permanently leaking and then an emergency spay, plus threetimes weekly vet visits for three weeks followed by twice weekly for another fortnight...she's a very expensive moggy lol

My old horse racked up over £1200 worth of fees, but was all in dribs and drabs, semi related incidents and much confusion...wouldn't have been half as much had he not decided to fall ill every single time on damned bank holidays or in the early hours of a weekend morning....

£4000 for a mare that needed colic surgery, £1850 for a colt who ripped his lower eyelid almost completely off and around £3000 for a filly with a bacterial gut infection that triggered life-threatening laminitis. The mare recovered but was left with a hernia that hasn't caused any problems. The colt was stitched back together, under general anaesthetic, and you would never know there has ever been an injury. He has gone on to win several national titles. The filly made a full recovery.

Was £670 the total bill for your cat? If so that is extremely reasonable for all the treatment she received. My last dog vet bill was over £100 and that was a scheduled appointment, lab fees for testing his urine, a course of anitbiotics and an anti-inflammatory jab.

Hope your cat is recovering well.

Blacksheep it all went a bit pete tong. He basically choked on some hayledge. Vet came out and needed to sedate him before they popped the tube in, as he put the needle in he did a little rear and then it went wrong. We didnt know this until the following day. All went well and vet cleared the choke. The next day he went out but i noticed a really nasty smell, it was coming from were he had been jabbed. I kept an eye on all day but by the nxt day a hole appeard. Vet was called and said he had, had some kind of reaction to the sedation drug or it happened when he had reared and maybe the needle came out and went back in again. The whole got to the size of a small apple. This was on his neck. They couldnt stitch it and had to b left to close on its own. He was on box rest for 2 wks as it was summer and they didnt want the flies to get into the hole. It was horrible you could see all the inside of his veins. He was a really good boy to treat and after two weeks he could go out in hand with it covered. It has heald comp now. The downside was the insurance wouldnt cover me for choke, which was ok,BUT wouldnt cover me for allergic reaction to ANYTHING. I changed insurance after that. Im careful about the way i feed now, everything is wet and sloppy. Im amazed at what some of you guys have paid out. Argh,

£3K ish for removal of ovarian tumour, including hospitalisation and post op care.

omg thats what my dales mare had

she got really naughty like seriouse rearing, napping, bucking and started to get really dangerous not to mention getting expolsive near any other horses and obsessed with mares bums. hmmmm why didnt i see it earlier

we didnt know what was wrong with her

she tried to mount my other mare got kicked on the point of her shoulder and had to be rushed to liphook as it was so soar the vet thought is was broken. i rang mum and she was at the yard in a flash and drove all the way there that instant i cried all the way trying to memorise every hair as i genually thought it was the last time i would see her. got her there and x-rayed it pheww nothing broken poor bronte felt so sorry for her self she needed no sedation and just buried her head in my side with my arm around her. did a ultra sound and there was a gap on 1mm to her tendon felt so lucky. the vet asked how it happend and figured out she prob had a tumor.

we left her over night and they rang us next day to say it was infected and they had to opperate eeek. they had also scanned her ovaries and she had a tumor the size of a grapfruit on her right one poor thing. we had to wait for her infection to clear up before removing it. so she stayed there for a week and it got infected again so hooray another op on her sholder this time succesful.

we had to wait another week or two then she had the op to remove her right ovary. another week or so later she was finally able to come home poor girly had been there for a month by the time we could bring her home. i think she ended up being a bit of a favorite every time we viseted she had a diffrent hair style we would take her grooming kit and some carrots which she always appreciated

this all happened in may this year and came to.......

approx £8,000

buts it was worth it she is back to her old sane sensible fun self i love her soooooo much
