Whats' best?. I am soon to take possesion of a lovely horse. He has not been microchipped or freeze marked and feel for security I should do one of these things. Does freezemarking do any good? Micro chipping seems definate and can't be tampered with but is obviously not seen by anyone as a deterrent. Opinions please would be welcome.

Unfortunately microchipping can be tampered with - they are easily, and commonly, cut out when horses are stolen.

If I was you I would do both - better to have as many deterrents as possible!

The freezemarks on my coloured cob saved him when he was taken from the field a couple of years ago. It was winter and he was fully rugged. The theives took the rugs off, found the freezemarks and let him go. Unfortunately they let him go on the side of the A3, but he is a laid back lad and grazed quietly until rescued.

I hadn't heard of microchips being cut out - you do have to find them first which requires a scanner. Its only the size of a grain of rice and it does move about a bit. All bar one of my current lot are microchipped because I had thought that was a legal requirement of sale nowadays. But I would never do without the freezemarks!
