What's everyone wearing for winter riding jackets these days?

Patagonia down jacket and a couple of berghus and marmot waterproofs. I used to climb/ live in the lakes so I have lots of outdoor gear :-)

I have many coats lol. In the winter I always wear a short sleeve t shirt and a hoody then on top, depending on how cold it is, I wear either:
-my uni coat (except it isn't totally waterproof and only "medium" weight.
- my cheap red but thick cost that I had embroidered
- HV polo ski jacket which is very warm but a bit long for schooling.
- sometimes I wear my thick HV polo gillet over a long sleeve top or hoody if it's just a bit cold and I'm schooling.

Just go to primark, its about 75% cheaper the thre riding equivilant and you just buy a new one every year so keep up wih the high street on the yard (if you like that sort of thing) the quilaity is probably about the same too! riding dtuff is far too expensive for what it is dont they know that horse people have no money as we have horses the only ones to afford such stuf are very rich people! £75 for a juole BW verses same thicknes/qulity of primark for £10

According to my OH I have far too many jackets. I have mountain horse blousons, a very warm puffa jacket, a musto waterproof one, various gilets mainly from joules. I find it is the zips that tend to go eventually.

I'm not sure I have *any* horsey brand stuff, unless it's things I've won! I'm much too cheap, you can buy better quality stuff at most outdoor shops. Winter here is pretty desolate at times, so I have a good stock of thermals (sexy!), fleeces, jackets and ski trousers! Oh, I do have a pair of the winter riding boots though, they're toasty warm :)

I have far too many jackets/coats!

- light purple Rydale bouson bought at 2005 Euros at Blenheim, very well used and sleeves frayed. Showerproof. Has had a new zip since i've owned it.

- blue Dublin waterproof lightweight jacket - older than the Rydale coat but worn much less. Annoying that it has no hood or hood attachment!

- red Ski jacket from TK Maxx - was supposed to be completely waterproof - it isn't. Supposed to be warm - it is. Velcro slowly detaching itself from the coat. It's about 3 years old.

- navy Horseware Kid's Corrib jacket age 15/16. Only bought it last week (cost £28.50) but I bought it off ebay without trying and it's huge on me! I think I may have to send it back and ask for a 13/14. I am 20 :o

Non-horsey ones -

- black showerproof coat that I've had since about 2002 :o I love it and it still fits fine even if it is a tiny bit worn!

-Beige 'nice' coat for going out.

-grey long wool coat - v. warm

-Showerproof Paralympic gamesmaker jacket

-2 fleeces

I bought a Musto jacket last year, which has a removable gilet that zips in. Its warm and definitely very waterproof but its just not a comfortable jacket to wear. Its a drama to do the zip up and feels bulky. Wish I'd saved my money and bought a Primark or TK one instead

Update: Since posting I have discovered that my riding stable will still run a hack if I have booked it even if it is pooring down. In theory this is fine, but I'd still rather stay dry if this is what we are going to do. I had a ski jacket I could have used, but this still left legs to get wet, unless I wore leggings which would be a real PITA. So I treated myself and today took delivery of a Shires Nevada. It looks the 'business' and even suitable for more than just riding - I must admit I looked at the rain falling like stair-rods from the sky earlier today and wore it on the school run!! I stayed dry!

Ohh might have to have a look at some of these jackets mentioned on this thread!

I 'treated' myself to an Equisafety one a while ago, and its basically rubbish imo, with crap zips, so am in the market for a wearable warm and waterproof one.

Ive got a Shires Hi-Viz, its really comfy & warm & its about to do its 3rd winter, id like to buy another but not paying £60 for one when i paid less that half that for this one.....i keep looking on Ebay & on other places to see if i can find one on sale, but alas no joy :(

Usually ones from outdoor activity type shops, ski jackets etc. Tend to look in tkmaxx, discount sports shops, camping shops. Currently wearing a berghaus that boyfriend has discarded, he has a v convenient taste for wearing that type of coat casually. Too big really but excellent mid winter to fit a ton of layers under. Very tempted to nick his current fave coat, but have been warned if he finds it smelling of horse bs excuses won't be believed!

I've got a Dublin thick coat, it's very thick do I sometimes struggle with riding in it but it's sooo warm. It's black with pink piping and got a pink fleece inside.

Snap! Dublin Empress jacket - I've had several, they are fab! But they don't make them anymore :( sad times. I have 2, one has lost its waterproofness now but useful for emergencies.

I have a joules Dakota I got off eBay and I love it because its purple so a bit interesting and has stripey lining. Quite expensive new though. It is really good and practical as has a 3 in one lining with a gilet etc although I've always left it in tact!

Loads, but none are perfect.
I had the empress (dublin) which I adored but it got ripped so I threw it away and then almost cried when I realised I couldn't buy another.
Replaced it with a dakota (joules) which leaked from day one.
So Hubby bought me a musto snugs blouson, which is LOVELY, but a very disgusting colour, so I can only wear it if I'm going directly to the yard.
Horse ware corrib which leaks and makes me sweat horribly.

I've found the most practical yard clothes are the ones I got free/ gifted and are lurid colours (vomit yellow musto jacket, pink yard boots which someone gave to me, and a bright blue horse ware hat I got free with something or other). The only thing half fashionable that are comfy and do the job are my musto boot socks.
The other mums at the school gate look lovely in their poo free hunter wellies and matching tweed 'casuals' coats and furry hats, but I just look like I dressed in the homeless shelter and rolled round in a muck heap for extra warmth.
After 30 years of horses I've still to find a pair of warm comfy breeches that don't require a mortgage, so my bottom half always consists of holey jeans with primark thermals under.

For when it's very cold I have a Puffa that I got for c£20 off a sale rail at Bramham Horse Trials a couple of years ago. I think no-one wanted it because it is exactly the colour of summer/grass poo but that suits me as the stains don't show!
For when it's wet, a 20-year-old Rohan walking jacket that belonged to my mother and is still 100 per cent waterproof, despite lots of washing and a rip in the front, and has great pockets for phone etc. I'd like to replace it with a new one but the price is quite stiff.
For when it's completely siling it down, a full-length and very stiff wax that is nearly too long for me to walk in but keeps all of me and saddle and quite a bit of the horse dry and has room underneath for loads of layers if it's cold as well as wet.
Can you tell I'm not really into fashion? The older I get, the more I care only about functionality!

I have quite a large collection of outdoor coats/jackets - non-riding ones are a very, very old and shabby barbour and a Drizabone. For riding wear, the majority are Musto, which I rate very highly - well made, well designed and really last: one Snugs jacket which is great for most of the year, one lightweight shower proof jacket, perfect for wet weather when it's rather too warm for a heavy layer, one rather ancient Paddock jacket and a Suffolk long coat which is fab if it's wet but not cold. In addition, I have two lovely Pikeur jackets, which were both presents, and a Toggi down-filled jacket for the seriously cold weather.

I've never had a problem with any of the equestrian brands and certainly find Musto pretty faultless!

I get very hot so tend to go for lightweight waterproof coats and wear a gilet underneath if I need to. I currently have 2 Ariat waterproof jackets - they're good because they have zipped vents under the armpits and are fairly long.

For very wet weather I have a long Musto coat and for cold weather I have a Barbour jacket.

For me layers are the best way to stay comfortable.

At the moment, I have a retired-from-mountaineering Mountain Equipment Gore Tex shell, a retired ski jacket for when it becomes bitterly cold, and a Drizabone (which really needs re-waxing).

I would love to have something between the Mountain Equipment jacket and the ski jacket, for those days when the shell is too light but the ski jacket is too heavy. A Paramo one would be perfect, but new ones are bloody expensive and barn clothes tend to get battered. I'm trying to work out how to acquire something like that used and cheap.

In case anyone is interested I picked up the Shires Nevada for £45 online - brand new, and someone in internet land is doing it in XL for £35 at the moment. I took a XXL (size 18/20) and I would say the sizes are what they should be with a very slight lean to 'generous'

Now that I think about it my riding/horsey wardrobe consists of old workwear, a hi-viz winter coat courtesy of my brother's old building firm who had to dispose of loads of perfectly good stuff when taken over by a new company and a 23 year old Royal Mail Engineering set of waterproofs that I was given when I worked on the Travelling Post Office for a very short stint. I was only about 18-19 and it's an XXL, was massive on me at the time but sadly I have grown into it :D I also have an old Lambretta parka and a corduroy jacket. I must look a right state actually, maybe I should buy something new and purpose made...

Ohh might have to have a look at some of these jackets mentioned on this thread!

I 'treated' myself to an Equisafety one a while ago, and its basically rubbish imo, with crap zips, so am in the market for a wearable warm and waterproof one.

I did the same, rode at the weekend in the downpours and looked like I hadn't had a coat on when I got back. So I'm also looking out for a completely waterproof one and will stick with my hi viz vest
