since ive moved my 17 month old yards he's lost quite a bit of weight so i got in touch with my vet who told me to put him on a basic chaff and a conditioning cube....hes been on that now for 3 1/2 weeks and im seeing now difference!! ive been told to stick him on a 'alfa a oil' 'basic pegasus mix' 'fibre beet' and carrots and oil. just wondered if any one else has any ideas....he's not underweight but he's not in great condition and im worried that if he's not getting the goodness that he needs then he's not gonna grow

fibre beet is brilliant. i use it on my 21yr old tb gelding and would never take him off it. high fibre diet keeps the gut/ digestive system functioning properly and there fore allows absorbsion of fats, vits and minerals. by boy windsucked until i totally changed his diet to high fibre feeds and now he has stopped totally and is maintaining and gaining weight.

Fibre beet is great stuff....if you can get them to eat it.
However you couldn't pay me enough to feed Pegasus mix, especially to a baby. Too full of starch and molasses. If he were mine I'd swap to a youngstock balancer such as Dodson and Horrell Suregrow, as this will ensure your baby is getting all th,e correct Vits and mins. This will h,help weight gain also. Then I'd add a simple grass chaff such as graze on, readi grass or just grass. I prefer this to Alfa a as alfa a is quite high in protein, which you don't want to overdo. Then for added calories I'd chuck in a good glug of soya oil. You could perhaps add some linseed for that bit extra calories and a fantastic shiny coat.
This is what I brought my youngsters on and they both look fab.

Don't forget it is not all about bucket feed - you need to ensure he is getting plenty of forage - decent grazing and/or ad lib good quality hay or haylage.

I agree that Pegasus mix is not the best thing for a baby - a balancer to provide the necessary vit/mins is a better option.
