He has had a fly rug on with a waterproof top so no sun would have got through it, and it wouldn't be from the rug as it doesn't have a neck on and that's gone the same colourIt could be sun damage from the amount of sun we've just had. A mineral supplement containing copper is meant to help with avoiding sun bleaching.
I havent fed him a mineral supplement since ive had him (from 7mths old), maybe i should look into oneDoes he get any minerals? I might give him some if not. I think he'll look OK when his coat is fully through
In all the years ive had him (his whole life), i have never seen his coat change like this!my bay is a bit like this a moment, its just where the summer coat is coming through on the clipped area!
Correction - i feed him spillers lite and lean so that is an all round vit and min balancer!I havent fed him a mineral supplement since ive had him (from 7mths old), maybe i should look into one
when did you clip him last? maybe its to do with the timing? and the strange warm weather we've had. I last clipped my gelding just before xmas, and it still looks almost like a fresh clip, where as normally it would have started grown back, so I'm thinking the weather has had a funny effect on the coat change this year.In all the years ive had him (his whole life), i have never seen his coat change like this!
What did you feed to correct this?Looks like one I had with a copper deficiency
Sorry I have only just seen your reply! Unfortunately no advice re feeding! It was a horse I bought and he straightaway improved on our land which is quite copper rich - the place he came from was just very lacking! What did you feed to correct this?
Most balancers don't have enough copper and zinc to help. Some horses need a lot more.Correction - i feed him spillers lite and lean so that is an all round vit and min balancer!

I like the ones from Progressive Earth in the Orkneys. Is there a particular supplement that you'd recommend? Sal does appear to be going black again now her summer coat is growing in but she get very light, almost a dun colour in places.
