I shall be using a Biscuit Tin for mine
grin.gif

Will be heading up to Tri in Kildare in a few days, this place is meant to be very good for vet supplies.

So, I'll get the ball rolling with what I already have and then need for the Ginger Nag.

Have: Sudocream
Scissors
Roll of Cotton Wool
Dettol
Stockholm Tar
That is all I can think of at this time
shocked.gif

Needl: Iodine Spray
Thermometer
Dressing - animallatex (sp?)
Vet wrap
Epsom Salts
Surgical gloves (can these be got cheaper like a chemist?)

Would like: Something like Stay tite for the Nags' legs
Arnica roll on

Any suggestions or ideas for the pot?

I have a fairly extensive "medical box", so extensive that it takes up half a wall of one room in my house; a refrigerator with medications and another couple of first aid boxes in the barn.

What do I have in mine; not sure what I don't have.

Banamine
Dexamethasone
Bute
Broad spectrum anti-bs
Penicillin
Loads of different sized needles
Loads of sterile syringes
Sterile gloves, both short and long
Antibiotic creams
Antiseptic creams
Thermometers
Stethoscopes
Every blooming ointment and cream under the sun
A million different types of wormers - of multiple amounts
Vetwrap
Bandages
Gauze
Super-strength sterostrips
Alcohol
Peroxide
Scalpels
Blades
Eye ointments
Ventipulmin
Prednisolone
Pepto Bismal
Milk of Magnesia
Mineral oil
Animalintex
Nippers
Rasp
Sterile water
Camrosa
Copper Sulphate
Nolvasan
Imaverol
Chlorhexidene
Gentian Violet
Povidone Iodine

God knows what else - loads more just can't think of any right now.

I would never be able to fit everything in a biscuit tin!
Mine isn't half as extensive as Tia's, but my essential item that I would suggest might be useful is wound wipes. They don't leave bits in/around the wound like cotton wool does, and they came in VERY useful for clearing up my horse's nosebleeds. I have the Red Rum ones in a little pack of 15 or so. I have about five packs so I am always stocked up in case of minor injuries!
I would suggest getting gamgee, vetrap, animalintex, stable bandages and fibregee/similar if you don't want to use up all your gamgee... I have various wound cleaners and disinfectants like iodine, purple spray, virkon etc. I chucked all my wound powders out and now only use cream (I have some yellow manky stuff) or hydrogel (eg. Equine America Derma Gel). I have Ice Blue (or something) gel for legs which is really good (it freezes my fingers!) And other things like Sudocreme, Cribox, hoof rasp, shoe pulling thing, Camrosa, thermometers, syringes (various sizes), suncream, fly gels and sprays, mud fever cream, hoof putty etc.
Then there are the things I have collected, by prescription, from my vet - vast quantities of bute, terramycin spray for thrush, hydrogen peroxide for cleaning seedy toe, sedivet tubes, ACP tablets; I'm sure there are a few other things but obviously you can't get those until you need them.
Finally I have my "alternative medicines box" containing things like devil's claw liquid, witch hazel and arnica gel, arnica tabs, Manuka honey... basically any homeopathic, herbal or other alternative medicines/applications. I also include various other supplements in this box such as calmer for emergency box rest, Pink Powder for upset stomachs, echinacea or Immuforte powder for the immune system and so on.
There are some good suggestions for the essential first aid kit on here: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/horse-care-index/general/tag/First_aid
My collection is still growing!

nappies - fantastic for poulticing
gaffer tape - for said poultice
hoofeez boot - fantastic for poulticing and turning out in
(can you see a theme running with my itmes!!
smirk.gif

surgical spirit - cheap and from the chemist
hydrogen peroxide - cheap and from the chemist
vaseline (as above!!)
as well as of some of the essentials mentioned by others......
sedaline and bute are always handy to have but these must be obtained from the vet.

In addition to that suggested above
A couple of pairs of old mens socks - great for pulling on over poultices on feet.
A couple of bottles of sterile water eye wash,
Couple of melonin dressings (the non stick ones)
Summer fly cream

1 have :
vet wrap (about 30)
soft band about10
gamgee
purple spray
wound powder
anseptic cream various
arnica
clinisan
betadine dry powder spray
betadine
intrasite gel
alleyvne
melion
menapore
silver dressing
honey dressing
varous urgo dressings
bute powder and paste
sterile water
surgical taple
penicillin
needles and syringes various sizes
amimal lintex poultices
nappies
sulpur
pig oil
sudacrem
vasiline
malaceb
can't think of anything else of hand but i am a student nurse so get a lot of dressings from reps

OMG, looooooads of stuff, including ABs, bute, ACP and colic stuff. The usual bandages, gauzes, poultices, gamgee and of course nappies, hibiscrub, iodine, all sorts of creams and sprays including purple spray (the stuff that's actually blue) Camrosa, Thuja cream, vaseline, syringes in all sorts of sizes, needles, a thermometer, a stethoscope, scissors, distilled water, saline solution, liquid paraffin, witch hazel, cooling gels, fly repellent creams, wormers, etc, etc, etc. A vet once joked I had more stuff than she did

hi all the best bottle to have in your medical box is
colloidal silver 10ppm,it will tackle most jobs quicker than most.
best regards.
will.

Wow, some very extensive lists!

The horse is not mine so I don't want to buy anything too expensive and nothing unnecessary.

Is Dettol as good as Hibiscrub (both diluted of course)

Does stuff like gamgee or poltice have a expiration date?

If I buy Iodine spray would I be wasting my money with Epsom salts?
I would like to buy out the shop of course but I have a budget.

I want to get Cider Vinegar as a general tonic.

What would be the top ten things that cannot be absent

In what ways can I cheat?
