As spring has arrived early and we are all getting excited about our the arrival of our new foals i thought it may be useful for everyone to list what they have in their foaling kits ready for the big day/s or should i say long nights lol

nothing!!! after spending 4 months at stud B decided she liked the practice but not the responsibility of having another foal!!!!!! plus side is will not not be getting the sleepless nights doing foal watch this year!!!!!!

Vetwrap for tails
towels
stethoscope
vaseline

baling twine for tying up placenta
plastic container with lid for placenta
baby bottle
plastic measuring cup for milking into and then put milk in bottle
(it's wider and easier than milking into a bottle!)
disposable camera
disposable gloves
iodine (I use spray kind, but most people dip so have a film container for this)
Sheet cotton or cotton wool
Laminated sheet with all the local vets numbers, foaling bank etc
Probiotic paste
Foal rug
pen and notebook
scissors
strong rope
Bucket for warm water
Packed into a plastic box which sits outside mares stable (yes, it's a big box! )

Sterilised beer bottle and teat in zip lock bag
Sterilised plastic measuring jug for collecting milk/colostrum in zip lock bag
Sterilised plastic funnel in zip lock bag
Sterilised container, with lid, for freezing collected colostrum in zip lock bag – I am anticipating B running milk again!

CLEAN leather mare headcollar
Vetwrap for tail
Plenty of latex gloves
Arm length examination gloves
Vet lube
Foaling ropes x 2
Phosphate enema x 2
Steralised towels
Torch and spare batteries
Gardening string for tying up placenta – better than baler twine, it’s too slippery – can also be used on the umbilical cord IF necessary i.e. profuse bleeding once naturally broken!
Black bin liner for placenta
Terramycin spray
Chlorhexidine /iodine/surgical spirit (double checked with my vet after talking to Penniless on here, this in the advised concoction for navels as per Rosedale’s)
Scissors
Surgical scissors
Stethoscope
Thermometer (both types)
Sterilised stainless steel bucket
Bute paste
Foal rug
Thermatex – well it’s in its bag in the tackroom, which is right next door to the foaling box!
Leadrope
Twitch
Chiffney

Phone numbers are all in my phone.

All of that plus sawn off large syringe for easy milking! and shortly my water hardness testing strips, distilled water and junior chem kit, to see if they do indicate foaling time accurately!

Pro plus pills, swallowed with red bull are good!!!!

I've not got my kit ready yet - got 3 months to go, but people talking about binbags for the placenta made me laugh....
We had 3 foals within 2 weeks a few years ago.
Two weeks after the first one was born, one of the staff was in our huge commercial bin doing a bit of 'bin jumping' to make more space. She was so industrious that she jumped straight through a binbag containing the 2 week old placenta and emerged squealing, covered from head to toe in maggots and rotting afterbirth.

Ahhh, how we laughed...
