Great idea but they seem very expensive. I'm sure they could be produced more cheaply.

I agree. If Ifor Williams could produce their own version at a reasonable cost I'm sure they would be popular.

Following on from the hay feeder...
An automatic horse feeder (like the timed cat ones), so on the morning of a competition you can have that extra hour in bed!
Or would help with skinny horses needing extra feeds.

I have seen ones that can be installed on the stable door. I mean something that a one horse owner could use

I've often thought this would be a good idea. I actually made on a few years ago, just to see how far off optimal a thrown together one would be - quite far off! It's difficult to speed up and capture the reaction without a warm climate and a put buried in the ground. I ended up slow burning in mine, and did manage to get break even on energy in vs energy out, but it didn't inspire me enough to continue

There's a company called Qube Renewables who make this sort of thing; 'small scale' but still too big/ugly to fit into the average yard
They look bloody complicated, too, although maybe once they're running they just look after themselves

Oh cool, I'll look them up! Yeah maybe, I can imagine that it might be one of those things that takes a lot of fettling to get right, but once you do they tick over quite easily.
