As I have to handle them on my own most of the time temperament is key. Ive had a talented one but she nearly killed me, before she killed herself! Would never go there again! I would look for abiltity as well, and wouldnt buy a horse with no abiltity purely because of its temperament.

It depends what you want to do with the horse! A real bad bugger in his box could be a brilliant eventer and the sweetest natured horse not capable of jumping a trotting pole!

I am afraid I can't choose..... Part of me wanted to say temperament but my horse is tricky on the ground but an angel to work so that is not entirely my focus. Ability is important - depending on what you want to do. If you don't intend to compete that much it may not be such a factor.
I am afraid I like good looking horses. Because I show I suppose.....I couldn't see myself buying something that did not have presence and a good conformation.
My horse is a real character and I love that too.
So I think I'll have to take all 4!! Sorry!!!!!

Ability first and foremost, which goes with looks ast the conformation will nearly always point to abilty.
Then character, and lastly temperament.
Couldnt give a monkeys if it trys to kill me every day, as long as it can gallop and jump.

Look at Monty for example.. Stunning looking, all the abilty you could want (two former Badminton competitors both described him as a Badminton horse), tough, sound, could jump any height, and do a 75% dressage test, but ask him to do all three on the same day and his temperament let him down every time..
You need trainabilty before the rest, then soundness (or soundness first i think) then ability...

i think it depends a bit on the riders/owners ability - if you are not brave and lacking in confidence i would say temprament/character are the most important - but if you have bags of confidence and a lot of experience then ability would be the thing - do you agree?

Me its definetly temperament which is the exact reason why I have pickle, I would hate to have such a HUGE horse with a bad temperament however good there ability was

I buy a horse based on its character first and foremost, the tough fighters will battle on even if they arent that talented (in eventing anyway) whereas the most talented horses wont always put in 100% for you.

Temperament doesnt really bother me
