whats next?? stage 2 ...

Hello

Hope someone can help me here, I have my stage 1 bhs and want to do stage 2, however I don't want to go any further with the jumping i.e for stage 3/4 , I do however want to do the care side, is this possible?

stage 1 - complete all
stage 2 - complete all
stage 3 - just care
stage 4 - just care

???


however I know if i don't have all complete i can't become an instructor to do the PTT etc, that is fine, but i was wondering what other direction i could go after doing my bhs care levels, if you want to specialise in something, how do you do it? what options are there?

i am up for training and studying and willing to keep learning, but I dont really know where to go from here.

the reason i dont want to jump is just my fear of xc jumps, which is a shame cause i would love to teach ( I am currently a swimming teacher/coach also)

I am not bright enough to go down the veterinary side and cant afford to go back to uni now.

You can do your PTT with just a Stage 2 and riding and road safety, and you can do your 3 and 4 but not do the XC jumping part as well, unless things have changed in the last few years

you aren't an AI until you have your stage 3 and PTT
you can take the PTT after stage 2.

I've just checked for you. You can definitely do your PTT with just Stage 2 and R&RS. I cant for the life of me work out whether you can do the riding part of Stage 4 if you have only done part of the riding at Stage 3. I'd give them a ring and check.

The problem with UKCC is they only seem to do Pony Club courses. I did look into it a few years ago but there werent any planned and I'm still waiting for someone to get back to me about it! Not that I could do it now, but they dont know that.

Can I suggest you turn this on its head and decide what you want to do in the future then work back to what qualifications you will need as a minimum. You could save yourself a lot of wasted study time.

for BHS exams you can do the following:

stage one complete

riding and road safety certificate

stage 2 complete

then you can choose to do the PTT - this will mean you can register as an instructor and get insurance etc

you can bypass PTT and continue with your stages, or do them in addition.

Stage 3 - care only

stage 4 - care only

Stable managers certificate - you get this after completing all Care sections and this exam.



Should you also add in the riding sections to the stages:

Stage 3 complete - you can do a portfolio (after your PTT) and then gain the BHSAI

stage 4 - complete - you can then do the Intermediate teaching test and become a BHSII

Stable managers certificate and senior equitation certificates - you then become a BHSI if you have done all of the teaching part along the way too.

I agree with this. from your original post you mention veterinary too. do you know what you want to do with your career? there are so many options and you could waste time studying for something you don't want to do.

For level 1 yes, though I don't think you have to start there I am sure friend started at level 2 when the particular disciplines take there part then.

If you do the PTT and complete a portfolio with some further work, you will gain the UKCC Level 2 certificate.

But yes, work out what you want to do and then work for the right qualifications.

it's more of a hobby /see where i go / do it for myself so i learn more than anything and be confident when helping with friends horses when away, and maybe look into part owning a stable when older (family already own back home but other people currenty run it )


I have my career in swimming teaching and coaching so i am happy with that as well. it's more just what can i achieve next, or can i study a certain discipline. im doing to do my stage 2 end of this year, and then do the care 3 and 4.. not to fussed with teaching.

stable managers would be fine, as long as i dont have to do scary jumps lol

There was a thing in the latest BHS magazine about them revamping the exams to have a 'non jumping' route for people who want to quality in flatwork or dressage instruction only.

So maybe worth taking your care sections and then watching out for changes.

that sounds good, i had a jump today and came off, really hurt my leg, was only 60cms as well. im really not the best confident wise to jump. however my friend had a jump on her horse and i helped her and she did great

There seems to be a fairly broad re-evaluation of the exams which is probably going to be a good thing.

But if you don't want to jump but do want to teach the UKCC route would be the best. You can go to your PTT after stage 2; but long term most people prefer an AI or above which you can only (at the moment) do with your stage 3.

Equally if you are doing this for personal challenge rather than for a career then just do the care modules!
