I have always been given bute for everything but a horse on my yard has just been put on danilon permanently... is very arthritic. Can anyone tell me what the advantage of danilon over bute is? Is it easier on the stomach? The owner of the horse who has just been prescribed it does not know what the advantages are. Is it more palatable?

For me taste, my old mare would not eat Bute but will Danilon. & its a bit more expecive. my other boy has no problem with Bute so he has that. both horses are arthritc!

danilion is sugar coated so easier to diggiest plus it is less toxic on the liver but does the same as bute witch is pain killer and a anti inflam.

danilon is actually metabolised to produce (amoung other things) phenylbutazone-ie bute!
both normal bute powder and danilon are microencapsulated and both cause liver damage.
not sure ive seen any convincing evidence of it being less gastro irritant or hepatotoxic.(but if anyone has a good paper feel free to PM)

yes you are right when it goes in to the body it his not a pain killer when it breaks down then it is then it goes straight to the sauce of the pain in stead of treating the whole body!

that why if you have a horse with a bad liver try and stay away from it coz it takes alot of work and stress on the liver to break it down.

Thanks, thats interesting. The horse previously had bute andn eaten it no problem and I was wondering why the presciption had been changed. The owner is not of a particularly enquiring mind, but I am...

it is aLWAYS best to find out why your prescripition as changed they both do the same thing but danilion is a lot more exspensive!
