My mare has not long been back from a loan home and basically her feet arnt good. Mainly from the first loan home where the farrier was useless, left her feet to grow long and he cut the heel away on her hinds :( totally gutted as im very very particular about feet being right etc. Her back feet are now very weak and cracking on the outside walls and when she was shod last night my farrier said he was lucky to get shoes on her. He has shod her with more length on the shoe to give her heel support, we didn't want to put wedges on as she has bone spavin in one hock and as she is sound at the moment we didn't want to change things dramatically too soon. I use effol hoof ointment on the outside and she is on a high fibre low sugar diet. What I want to know is which hoof supplements you use and if they actually work?
 
Hi I am also looking for best hoof supplements. From reading this forum everyone seems to rate prohoof? A friend has recommended total eclipse from SS as has simple systems themselves however this seems pricey at £53.50 for 15kg(!!). I'm interested to see what other people respond to this too!
 
Hoof First by a company called Horse First. It is very good stuff. It is 45 a tub but lasts three months. I feed it in conjunction with a high fibre diet and also regularly use Kevin Bacon hoof grease.
 
i used to use formula4 feet and felt it improved my horses feet. i stopped using itfor a couple of months as i changed to baileys lo cal balancer and didnt want to overload on the same type of supplements. her feet started to break up and i have now gone back to formula4feet. some people on this forum have said it hasnt worked for them but it has worked for my 22 year old and i will now continue using it.. i think you just to to try and find the supplement that works for your horse ...
 
I've started using pro balance + from progressive earth for my loan boy. I've also heard pro hoof is very good but it is a bit more pricey!
 
Forage Plus Hoof Health Balancer (they do a summer and winter version). It seems expensive but it is an excellent product.

Oh and putting anything on the feet is not only a waste of money but also counter-productive as it stops the hooves from doing what they should be doing (I know I also used to use Effol and frankly I think the best I can say about it is that it made me feel like I was doing something).

I used to think putting stuff on the hooves was a waste of time but Kevin Bacon hoof stuff has certainly helped keep my mares hooves moist
 
Thanks for all the suggestions, I will look in to them :) I only put effol on the outside so any moisture from the ground can still be absorbed to:)
 
We took part in the trial and study for Science Supplements 4Feet. Put simpy, I've bought 2 tubs since. I will dig out the before and after photos if anyone is interested and the "scoring" chart the vet compiled. It uses a different form of Biotin and you can tell the quality is much better.
