Yes actually, I've held plenty of wound up horses of all ages and sizes for the vet. Can't see the point of waiting until it gets infected before giving the antibiotics. If it needed the vet, then straight away is preferable to waiting till it gets worse. I'm pretty sure your vet is more than capable of handling a section a yearling, maybe not you though.

Huge point to that - over use of antibiotics is why things like MRSA develop. You'd would be surprised what healed without assistance and in youngstock especially, I would not be in a hurry to call the vet out unless it was something major (like a huge rip in the nose that needed stitches!)

NHS doctors are being told not to administer antibiotics until they are sure it is needed!! Horse owners ought to take the same stance, but we are still very guilty of prophylactic use of drugs as so many people like to do "something".

Yes, my point being that the vet would be more able to decide the course of action if he had seen the injury straight away instead of 24 hours later when it had got full of dirt. I'm not at all advocating the needless use of antibiotics, but if th OP though it was bad enough to need them the next day then the injury needed to be seen by a vet on the day it happened in my opinion.

There is nothing nasty about my comment at all, if you don't want opinions then don't bother to ask the question in the first place, and why is it hijaking your post??
