hi mare is due to foal this week is waxing up, i just wanted to know what spray people used for the umbillical cord and do u spray it almost straight away? thanks
I have heard iodine spray is good, you can also buy a specific aerosol for umbilical cords, cant remember off the top of my head what it is called though...
Vet's advice to me recently when I asked the same question (my mare also due to foal this week!) was that dilute Hibiscrub was the best idea ... she said "for first 24 hours, keep dipping the end of the cord regularly, and I've never known a foal to pick up an infection with this approach". So that's what I'm planning to do!
I should say that any of those recommended above would do the job, as long as it is done ASAP after foaling. There is a less likely chance of obtaining an infection if foaling outside than there is from foaling indoors, but if you want to be there, on the spot, then indoors is more convenient!!!
