What's the best way to get rid of brambles?

As above really. Two years ago all the brambles in my mares field were chopped down at ground level by the farmers. Now I rather liked the brambles as they gave her some shelter and stopped people realising there were horses in the field. Anyway, the farmers haven't done anything to remove the roots and they are now all growing back and the runners are a nightmare! We have lost three shoes in three months. I do realise I could put temporary fencing round them but don't want to do this long term. What is the best way for me to remove them myself on a permanent basis?

Grazon 90 weedkiller should kill brambles. I haven't tried it on brambles but its worked wonders on the docks in my field.

Yes another vote for Grazon. The alternative is you dig them up, but that is one hell of a job and you will be scratched all over and then you have to dispose of them somehow, somewhere.

Pigs! :)

No joke, but not always possible I admit that.

They'll eat the roots and plough the field (or part of it you want) at the same time.

We've always used a combination of pigs and goats to speed things up. OH nearly had a fit when I suggested it earlier this year though :o I'm not allowed; sheep, pigs, cows, alpacas or llamas... he still needs to be trained

Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated!
Love the idea of the pigs but think the yard owner would have a fit! :D
