whats the best way to learn a dressage

I draw an arena on a piece of paper and 'ride' it with a pen, drawing the movements. I also stand at the end of the school and imagine myself riding the test at least 10 times - drill it in

I ride it first. Then write the letters down on a piece of paper to scale to the size of the arena. Then get someone to read it and basically just draw the way with a pen.

I just keep drawing it and usually know it after a few times.

If you go in my horsebox you will generally find loads of pieces of paper with circles all over them, do it to jog my memory on the way if im not driving.

I draw a mini school and follow the pen!

Then, I walk it in my garden,

Then I'll do it on the horse!

Then, if I'm still doubting myself and my horsey friend is going anyway, I'll ask her to call it!

This is going to sound completely barking but when I was younger I use to do the following and it really worked. Its something I encourage the kids I teach to do when they are preparing for a test and they always seem to remember their tests too!

Set up a mini dressage arena in the garden, say 20ftx10ft and put markers where they usually go and then "ride" the test on foot using walk for walk, run (or jog) for trot and a skip for canter. It will not only soon become second nature to do the test but you'll also start to get a feel for the shapes etc that you will have to ride.

Just don't do it in front of someone, especially if they have a camera!

We used to have the mini dressage arena in the kitchen! Cantering round while sunday lunch was served was always interesting. Now I try to remember them as I fall asleep - usually get about half way through so the start of the test always flows better than the end!
