got a tb with rubbishy feet atm. Have been looking at hoof suppliements, but they are a bit pricey, and I am a bit skint atm. Whats the cheapest suppliment/etc that I can use that would likely to work?

I use Effol Hoof Moisturiser on my TBs feet. Its £5.99 for a pot which lasts months and the farrier couldn't believe the difference. Her feet have grown at an astonishing rate too.

I was extremely sceptical when it was recommended to me as I'm one of those who thinks the more money you spend, the better it should work. But I was skint and someone gave me a half used pot and I was amazed, am definitely a convert now.

Biotin.

About one of the only things around which willl improve the actual quality of the horn.

Moisture wise, Effol hoof creme is excellent however it is oil based, an alternative to this is the NAF hoof moist, which is water based and excellent.

Otherwise.. im afraid TB and feet are usually an expensive business. I know mine is!

Feed black sunflower seeds - mine has a mug twice a day and rock hard feet, as did Cairo and both were barefoot. Going to start new clydie on them which she arrives. They do take a few months to show the results but you will notice a good shine and soft coat within a few weeks.

Oil based hoof produces, if used day in day out affect the water content of the hoof by effectively causeing a waterproof barrier and preventing natural level of moisture.

Water based produces do no do this, they are absorbed easily into the off (this is why they look to 'dry' quicker) and still allow water to enter the hoof.

Alot of farriers use the kevin Bacon hoof moisturiser, but say to only use it once of twice a week.

Most sware by water based produce.. Personally im Water based all the way!

PS i love a good hijack!

My OH is a farrier, and he says cornucrescine on the coronet band (must rub in well - he says use your fingers as they then warm the cornucrescine and it absorbs better) and good old fashioned WATER on the hoof wall. Can't get much cheaper than water

My farrier strongly advises that in most cases feeding Biotin ALONE will not sort out poor hoof quality. There are lots of products around now that contain biotin, but are combined with other necessary supplements like Zinc and Methionine and these are the way forward e.g Carl Hester has just put his name to one which i believe is around £12 and does just that. I have a Trakehner who has appauling feet (he's just had to have his two fronts glued on!) but my farrier and I have started to see a slight improvement afetr using Kevin Bacon hoof moisturiser wich was around £11. He is also on Formula4Feet, a feed supplement, whihc is highly rated however it was about £78 for a bag so not the cheapest around! The frustrating thing with hooves is that nothing will sort your problem overnight, it means finding a product - usually by recommendation - and sticking with it :-)

Yes in the bird food section - I get 15k bags as it is cheapest way of doing it.

I started couple of years back after a post by Tia and there are plenty of people on the forum doing this.

They are fine for equines, just put in the feed - no need to soak etc. Black are the best - high in oil, minerals and vits.

A friends shire i used to ride had terrible feet and she was advised (by farrier, i think) to feed him jelly. Dont know why it would help?? He didnt like it anyway and wouldnt eat it, but the others were happy to clear it up for him so i think he was just fussy.

Also hijacking slightly

How many/much black sunflowers do you feed per day and how long does it take for crumbly feet to improve - ish??
