Whats the deal with Hillside?

Ive just seen on facebook a photo and appeal for money to help their rescued animals. There were lots of comments about the amazing work they do and offers of help and donations.
However In the back of my mind I *think* they are dodgy or something is not quite right (because of something ive heard not just gut feeling) I cant remember what or why though!
I know there was a thread recently on here, probably relating to the same photo and appeal I've seen. Is it simply a case of them taking on too much or is it more than that?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree and they are totally lovely people doing a great job- in which case I apologise and will donate ;)
 
Something about them not being a registered charity and them saving animals from slaughter, including pigs, sheep, cows etc... They aren't saving true welfare cases so to speak.
 
I think they have a reputation for taking on more animals than they can reasonably care for and then having to launch campaigns to pay for them.

Not saying they are bad people, just not very sensible sometimes.
 
They are a business which is overstretched to look after the animals they have taken on, won't rehome and won't pts but can afford to pay for investigative work, all of which is funded by public donation.
 
As far as i have always known, they are a petting farm type thing. They profess to do good work etc but as said, taking animals from the slaughter house is not rescuing them. They did a good job exposing the abuse horses face, and they are to be commended, but they are still kind of going off the track.
 
I am also confused, after reading about what they do on their website it says the rescue animals from the farming industry? to me this is very vague, does it mean cruelty cases or generally rescuing animals which are going to slaughter? If that is the case they will rescuing animals until the end of time, Farm animals are bred for slaughter because that's what farming is.
I am a farmers daughter and live on a farm so I am biased, also on their website is a little blog about a 'hereford calf which was rescued and is now loving her free range life' Im sorry but are they trying to save all animals from slaughter?!

Yep this is exactly what these people are trying to do...
 
Well its just pointless... Farmers will always send animals to slaughter because that is how they make money and its is the whole purpose of farming. It says that they have over 2000 animals in their sanctuary.... I think they need to start looking for more space if that is their plan because they will be 'rescuing' animals until the world ends.

Yep :) that was why I raised it :) it takes donations away from genuine welfare cases.
 
Ok, so they don't go out as such to say a neglect case but save animals going for meat.
Do they deal with neglect at all? As in if someone locally saw a horse starved would they have rights akin to the RSPCA or similar to go and remove the animal?

Noone, not even RSPCA, have the right to remove an animal. Only the police can grant access and they have to get permission from a judge.
 
I have some leaflets from Hillside as I visited recently, they have pigs which were apparently found on the road. They state that sows on the way to slaughter give birth in the lorry and the piglets fall through the slats onto the road ! They have a cow which was found
wandering the streets and couldn't be caught so was going to be shot. Someone obviously caught it! Have not read much of paperwork as some of it v distressing by the looks of it. They have taken on Shires from the Norfolk Shire Centre, which was where I visited.
