i don`t know-can be different things.
someone i knew bought a jumping schoolmaster and had to be led out of the ring on him because he was too whizzy , would have took a person who could already jump around but she thought she just had to sit on him and he would do it and it frightened her.
at a riding school near me,the horses only do things if they are asked correctly in the right way, so this teaches the rider to ask properly or else you get no response.
imo it can mean anything between a safe plod and a horse to take you around an event course.

(have confused myself now cos it`s late.lol)

There are defiantly two definitions. One will go about and do the right thing without you doing things propperly and will usually have the patience of a saint.

A true schoolmaster has competed (or at least trained) to a very high level in that chosen discipline and won't respond until asked propperly. They usually don't suffer fools lightly either! lol Dressage schoolmasters, most of us mere mortals will spend most of our time going sideways, SJ'ers are normally very hot and same with eventers!

Echo what Ezme said - I think of them as two seperate types. The equine saint that will do as asked regardless of what they riders getting wrong, and the true 'schoolmaster' who will only do it right if asked correctly. I would however expect both types to be safe reliable to ride, so even if you get it wrong, you're not going to be hur.
