For me, ponies are just clever and that's what makes them either the worst or best mount for a child. They have a greater sense of self-preservation and generally are incredibly quick thinkers. That's what makes them so good at jumping without all the input as well- they'll see a problem coming up and try and fix it themselves.
Horses aren't as clever- they are more lead whereas ponies tend to be leaders? They rely on their rider for more guidance.
It's almost not just a height thing I don't think- you get horses who think like ponies, and ponies who are little horses.
Oh, just height Not sure who's smarter, my 17hh 5YO dumblood or 13.3- they're both pretty bright when they want to be! Horse is def a quieter temperament and less bold and sensitive but that's not to do with being a horse or pony.
Their epickness of course - Ponies rule ;D Wouldn't be without my pocket rockets. Although neither of mine are technically ponies, they're both native crosses and have the pony character and charisma I love. It's their cheeky personalities - horse's generally seem much more serious about life.
No idea never owned a horse only ponies between 12.3hh and 14.1hh, I'd be terrified of getting on a horse, with me definately its the height. I've had a very bolshy Sec D not a first pony, and have a lovely NF who is an angel
Personality - ponies have it, horses don't! Although we have 5 horses I much prefer the 8 ponies in all dealings, I have yet to have a horse terrify me the way a pony can too!
My sister used to say ' pony will get you out of trouble, horsse will get you in it'
It is a general statement tho and there are exception but have found that to be true of our lot.
