Crikey its complicated. My friend has received enough literature to match war and peace in the hope we can make sense of it all and register our filly.

Can anyone help re the definitions of the above as we are finding it hard to decide what the filly is ?

She is circa 50% coloured dark bay / black and 50% white. Her face is going dun and under the black is dun which we're not sure will dun out or remain black with goldy flecks.

Any help appreciated

Tobiano is when they look like a pot of paint has been tipped over them from the top, some more white on the top and less underneath. So my boy is mostly white over his back and down his sides, but his tummy is bay and his bum and neck are bay/black with white trickling over his bum too.

There's a really good guide on the BSPS website (british skewbald and piebald society) and it goes through the markings :)

Just found this:

On an Overo colored horse, the white will not usually cross the back of the horse between the withers and tail. It is desirable for all four legs to be dark, or at least one. Face markings are usually bald-faced, apron-faced or bonnet-faced. The white color throughout the overo's body is generally irregular or sometimes 'jagged' instead of forming smooth lines between the colors.

This will explain it, and show pictures, also a very good coat colour guide.

To simplify Overos do NOT have white over the topline from withers to tail. This is an Overo, or, to confuse matters, a sabino frame overo.

This foal is a minimally marked sabino frame, you can just see his belly splashes.
