Do any bit experts know the difference between a tom thumb gag and a wilkie pelham? Are they effectively the same bit with the addition of a curb chain?

Never heard of a wilkie Pelham and on googling only the Fylde saddlery came up. That looks like a Pelham to me.
Pelham is meant to be used with two reins, the Tom Thumb is ridden with one rein usually and it puts on a lot of poll pressure. The older Tom Thumbs used to have much longer shanks than what you see nowadays

Fylde’s lower the pressure and action on the poll to that similar to the wilkie snaffle for those that dont like the step up - otherwise its just a normal two rein pelham.
