What's the difference - pts or moved away

I have been reading the pts threads with interest, with people saying that the horse's friends should be allowed to say goodbye so they understand that the horse has passed away - I see the logic to it.

However, how do you get a horse to understand that his best friend has gone because it's been moved to another yard or has died at the vets rather than at home?

You don't. If a friend horse moves away or dies at the vet's, the horse doesn't know why or where. When the horse sees a body, it understands the horse is gone, and not just disappeared, ime.

Where horses have been companions for many years and are strongly bonded I think it's a great thing to do. People at livery rarely do it in my experience , and its usually those who've kept their horses at home, and have a pretty stable heard, who do.

If there is a true bond, i believe the horse left behind holds out that the one going to the vet is going to return, when they see one that has died they know it has gone and move on.

Completely agree with this. Sadly my little mare was put to sleep at the vets and my boy did not get to say good bye to her, and he was distraught for weeks. He has since developed extreme separation anxiety from my new mare, and I'm convinced it's due to not knowing where she went
