Got to go and a bit and want to know how to physically measure my horse. I haven't got a bitting stick or a dowl whatever that is. Will a tape measure do the job? Need to get this right.
Borrow a bit off someone else which you guesstimate will fit. Try it on (make sure its clean) and see how the size suits him, if you need an extra 1/4 of an inch or less 1/4 of an inch. Then measure their bit with the tape maeasure.
As a general rule when the bit is straight in the mouth there should be a thumbTIPs gap at either side
