As I no longer own a horse or a dog, I thought it might be a good idea to offer my services as general dog walker, bring horses in/muck out/ change rugs etc. I am not looking to make money from it really although a few pounds here or there wouldn't go amis.
My question is, I would be putting a notice up in surrounding villages, local news etc but the livery yard over the road from me is completely DIY so nobody actually works there.
Would it be rude to pop round and ask one of the liveries to put a sign up in the tack room?

Not at all. I think it'd be a great idea. You may be surprised at the number of DIYer's that need some help. It may not be on a regular basis but even weekend / holiday cover is something.

Good luck

xx

Not at all rude. As long as you are polite (which you clearly are) then that is fine. Just be clear from the start exactly what services you are offering then folk will not take advantage of you and then you will soon hopefully have some good times with dogs and horses. There are lots of nice dog and horsey folk who would relish someone to help like that I am sure.

I would ask around and definately pop into the livery yard. I would suggest you look into getting some insurance tho in case anything were to happen whilst you were in charge.

I think it's a great idea to ask to put a sign up at the DIY yard. If they are anything like our yard, there is always someone needing help.

Some DIYers just share favours, but it's good to have the option to pay for something to be done if no one is able to help you or you feel it's a big or regular favour that's taking advantage or you don't have time to return a favour

Great idea, We had a lad that done this down our yard and at other local yards as well . He made some money. I used him when I went out for the day or away on holiday, also in the mornings so i didnt have to go down before work to turn out. Give it a try

Yes thats what I am hoping with the DIY, at my friends yard they are always paying people to turn out in the morning etc, I can actually see the yard from my house so perfect location

I hope I get some calls, It would be a nice thing to do to just stay involved with things really!
Fingers crossed I get a few calls!

I think whatever sign you put up, you do need to make it perfectly clear whether you expect to get paid. There is a huge difference in someone who is happy to muck out for free and someone who wants a £5 each time. One person is going to end up being upset if they don't understand the deal.

You could circulate a price list rather than a poster -

£2.50 turn out with rug change.
£2.50 take in, rug change & feet pick
£5.00 muck out
£x take in & hold for farrier
£x field check.
etc.

This is what I wondered about tbh, not really sure how to contact owner as they are not on site and don't really have anything to do with the yard at all!
Perhaps I will ask the liveries if they think YO would mind and if he objects just have them take it down!

I think this is a great idea, I was saying to my friend today actually that I do not know what I would do if my yard closed down. I am on PL due to my job and there are not many yards that offer PL round my way so I would def consider it if I knew and was on diy.

Good luck!
