a competition or hunting?! And how fit was your horse when you did it?! I'll be going back to old fashioned hacking miles to shows as I'll be without a trailer this season, so was curious as to the furthest people have gone?!

I hack to dressage and showing shows as well as RC rallies - I don't know the distance but I walk and it takes about an hour to get there.

I would not say my pony is very fit but as just walking it is not much more strenous than walking round the field and he lives out so does quite a bit walking around the field!

I used to go on all day rides but I'm not sure how many miles we covered, I was the one known for disappearing off all day, when I first went onto a livery yard people used to panic and wonder where I was, till they got used to the fact that if I went for a hack on weekend, it would be an all day affair, they stopped sending the search parties then lol!

I once hd to hack back from a show when my pony Bomber decided he didn't want to load coming home, that was a long ride specially when you couldn't ride down the motorway....typical welshy!...did things on his terms lol

, funnily enough he never did it again though.

I hacked to a show an hours walk away before but only did one class when I got there, it was more about the experience than the show though.

I have hacked to my friends yard which is 2and a half hours away stayed over night (my horse in one of their stables and hacked back in the morning) before

I used to hack everywhere as we had a lorry but my horse wouldn't load!!

I hacked him to PC camp - it was over 10 miles away - and then he had a couple of hours rest before a full day (ie two 2hr mounted sessions) I also hacked him home after the ODE on the final day - we walked the whole way though. (This was about ten years ago so both a lot younger and fitter!)

I used to hack him to a dressage venue about 3-4 miles away regularly. I wouldn't do much of a warm up really when we got there, and I'd normally do two tests. He was super fit at the time, regularly competing, jumping etc. As we had no winter TO at the time, he was exercised twice a day (lunged/hacked AM then schooled PM).

TBH I don't see a problem with it - I used to make sure I got off and led my horse for a bit before we got to the show, more to give his back a rest than him physically being tired. Also don't sit around on your horse like he/she's an armchair once at the show (so many people do this!) - give their back as many breaks as possible.

Luckily my lad now loads fine, but I still hack to the occasional show.

Hacked home 4 1/2 miles from a show with Genie. Trailered there and she'd had a long day showing, plus wasn't very fit. She was happy enough though.

I have hacked for hours to get to hunting and to shows (dressage, Jumping, Showing anything realy). I once hacked 2 hrs to go show jumping did two classes (winning one) then hacked 2 hrs home. We trotted most of the way. When i was hunting i used to get offered lifts home alot or atleast some of the way as people felt sorry for Lucy as i would hack 1 1/2 hrs to a meet do almost a full day then hack home. Lucy is a 13.2hh welsh type pony. She was an endurance pony though and did rides of upto and inclu 80km so was very very fit. We both enjoyed riding for miles together although most people thought we where mad. But i wanted to compeate and had no transport.

I used to hack to shows with my loan pony. It was about 6 miles each way. We would then do about 3 or 4 classes, both jumping and showing. The ponies never complained, nor were they ever particularly tired!!!!

i hack an hour to my RC every month during the showing season, do 3 classes, spend all afternoon there then hack back. gets my cob lovely and fit, plus she's a bad traveller,. once got a lift to the show ground which is 5 mins drive away and she was so sweaty when i got her out, so really im lucky I have a show in hacking distance!

I hacked 4.5miles to the meet, hunting for 3 hours and hacked about 3 miles home again.
Last Weds I hacked to work about 8-9 miles then took her hunting for 4 hours on the Thurs.
She is pretty fit but I go on how she feels and come home if she is tiring.

The only show within hacking distance from my yard is held in a field 5mins away once a year. But horses arent allowed in the people enterance so its around a 20minute hack to get there.
Its actually not a great show, but its the only time that I'm ever going to get a nice quiet hack through some woods, so I might as well go.

Used to hack to SJ comps about 5 miles away from the yard, do a few classes and hack home again. Pony was a tubby Connemara and not overly fit yet she coped fine.

I once hacked about 4 miles to a hunting meet, trotted most of the way as I was late. Charlie was still a nutter and took at least an hour to calm down, stayed out with the hounds for about 3 hours (then my stirrup leather broke

) and then hacked 4 miles home. He wasn't particularly fit but he lasted well.

Wow! Some of you have hacked pretty far! Think my neddies will be fine, both pretty fit, and shows are very max of 6 miles away! They'll be doing lots more miles soon anyways with the coming of spring! Whoop!
