I just wondered what was the furthest anyone has hacked to a show. Also what type of show was it SJ/Dressage?

I want to hack to our local show venue but im not sure if it is too far for my horse (he is an arab tho?)

6-7 miles each way, it takes me about 2 1/2 hours as there's a lot of road work, I do unaff dressage and RC show stuff (hopefully with some jumping this year

).
Mine have always coped well with the hack, and it warms them up nicely!

We go 8 miles to SJ and get the Section A to pull a carriage with extra kit, lunches, water, hay together with driver and passenger. All the nags are still full of going on the way home but the riders are shattered and take turns in the carriage!

About 7 miles to do a couple of showjumping classes and home again.

Ahh, that was the first summer I had Will, little begger still had the energy to make a run for it and bolt from his stable when we got back home

i dont know how many miles, probably around 7 or 8 miles, its usually about an hour - 1 and a half hours, but i will sometimes hack for 2 hours to a show and 2 hours back and still do a few SJ classes, showing, dressage, anything really! but this is usually in the summer when my pony is very fit, and he copes fine!!

in a way i think it is alot better to hack to shows as it warms them up nicely, as some people dont warm there horses up properly when they box to shows.

arabs do cope very well with long distances as they have good stamina, so im sure you will be fine!

10 miles. Little sod refused to load in the trailer (we had allowed lots of time fortunately). We hacked to the show, did 3 classes which he won, and then he RAN into the trailer to come home again. Mind you, this was 30 years ago when I was MUCH keener to get to a show than I am now.

Ditto Diesel Dog. I didn't think anything of riding for 2 hours (at a good pace) to get to a little local show with my little rucksack with my lunch, halter and money thrown over the saddle. We'd pick up friends on the way and have a big day of it. Some days we never even made it to the show if we got distracted by a good forestry.

Life seemed so unhasselled then, I must lighten up on my daughter.

Thanks for your replies guys, some people I have spoken to locally have said I was silly to try to hack there but I didnt think it was too far.

I really want to compete at Keysoe Equestrian Centre as its so nice there. It will be just under 8 miles there and 8 miles back and I will only be doing either showing or 2'3/2'6 SJ. Once the clocks change I will be hacking nearly every night so I should think he will be fit enough.

To be honest he hates travelling that much (when he loads) I think he would probably rather hack there anyway.

Same as Enfys. When I was a child I used to hack to all the shows. We'd leave at 6am to reach the shows by 9am. We used to do a dressage class, always one or two jumping classes and then the whole of the gymkhana! My super girl used to win pretty much everything so then I would put the cups/trophies in my little backpack and ride home again. Funnily enough it never took us as long to ride home - we used to belt it home. Gosh thinking back, our ponies must have been SOOOO fit!
