Just interested in what you think is the best make of lorry to be a horse box, Iveco, Daf, Merc, Renault? I have a Daf 130 which I know is a small bhp and I do find even empty when we hit a hill we go veeeerrryy slowly. Does anyones wing along like the wind (legally of course)!!

I had a DAF 130/45 turbo and it was much speedier than my previous Cargo 811. It was a very light weight lorry though.

I had an Iveco 75E17 as my first lorry so nothing to compare it to until I recently got a 75E15 and the difference is massive. The 75E17 was so much more powerful, you couldnt tell you had horses in even up steep hills. Ive also driven a couple of DAFS. The DAF 150?? was powerful too. I put my foot down in an empty 130 and didnt think I'd move if it had a horse in but my friend had one and loved it, said it was really nippy.

Erm have you thought about this question?

DAF make a 130, 150, 170 and 180 BHP engine - so duh its the 180 in the DAF LF 7.5t range

The most powerful will always be an artic with a powerful tractor on the front, but I don't think that is really your question!

Pretty sure one of these would do just fine up a hill:

Don't forget the newer lorries have a speed limiter put on them now, so anything after 2002 will only be able to go at 56mph, regardless of the engine power. It's very annoying if you have a really powerful engine, because the only time you can overtake is going uphill!

You can get some very high horse power 7.5 ton chassis that are aimed at draw bar work MAN do a 210 hp, merc 230hp!! and daf a 180or 220 hp however as op said the post 2001 lorrys have a limiter set at no more than 90km or 56mph
so having a very big engine isnt much benifit !!!what you need is torque and good gearing, 6 is best My merc is great as it will still do the top speed in 5th so a long hill on the motorway it still maintains a good speed then you just go back in 6th on the flat, where as with a 5 speed there is a bigger gap between 5 and 4th so when you start to lose speed and have to change
into 4th you realy slow down ..

my MAN steams up the hills fully loaded(3 big horses and stuff). and flies on the motorways so much that i have to watch my speed and drop the revs. my old cargo (bless the hill billy lorry always got us there slowly) we all used to lean forward going up the hill.

i had a Man 816, phenomenal engine. but then it was a 10 tonne downrated to 7.5 tonne. So A very powerful engine for a 3 horse lorry. We could just keep going up hills in 4th with ease.

Best bet is get a oakley built HGV but tell them you dont want a poxy 340 scania chassis no sirree!!! order a R 730hp tractor unit and have its chassis streched to fit under your super lux roling gin palace oakley, yes aparently you can also carry horses on them !!!:D
